Coalition forming to conquer Crawford County area addiction issues

Whether or not you have been affected by addiction, it’s still your problem. Substance abuse is a community problem. 

That’s according to behavioral and mental health therapists and professionals from the Crossing Rivers, Gundersen, Mayo Clinic and Crawford County health systems who gathered at the Responding to Addiction Town Hall April 10, at the Prairie du Chien City Hall. About 30 area citizens attended, including recovering addicts and their families as well as stakeholders in local law enforcement, justice, corrections, probation and parole, school, etc.

The River Ridge boys and girls track and field teams both won the Cassville Invitational Thursday afternoon.

River Ridge won the girls meet with 174 points. North Crawford had 129, Potosi 125, Cassville 74, Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg 57, Black Hawk 56 and Pecatonica-Argyle 40.

second at Fennimore

The Prairie du Chien Blackhawk golfers opened their 2018 season in a four-team nonconference match at Hickory Grove Country Club in Fennimore on Thursday, April 12. 

The Blackhawks took second place with a score of 198. Fennimore shot 182 to win the match, with Iowa Grant at 230 and Wonewoc 239.

River Ridge girls

Barneveld defeated host River Ridge 21-1 in high school softball Thursday afternoon.

River Ridge scored its lone run in the bottom of the third inning. Barneveld scored 1 in the first, 1 in the second, 3 in the third, 1 in the fourth, 2 in the fifth, 1 in the sixth and 12 in the seventh.

Pecatonica won a doubleheader from host River Ridge 4-2 and 12-0 Thursday afternoon in high school baseball.

In the opener, River Ridge scored 2 runs in the top of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead.

Pecatonica scored 3 runs in the third to go ahead 3-2.

Bluff View principal charged with physical abuse of a child

Prairie du Chien Bluff View Intermediate School Principal Aaron Amundson was charged in Crawford County Circuit Court April 11 with one count of the physical abuse of a child.

Amundson, 43, faces up to 3.5 years of imprisonment and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, a Prairie du Chien police officer met with Dennis Knight, Melody Cox and their son on March 24. Knight wanted to speak to an officer regarding his son being assaulted in school, the complaint said.

Crawford, Clayton, Allamakee counties launch market analysis

Driftless Development, Inc., the newly formed economic development organization for Crawford County, is partnering with Allamakee and Clayton counties in Iowa, on a new market analysis study of the greater Prairie du Chien market area. As a part of the study, residents and business owners in the region are encouraged to participate in a short survey including questions about shopping habits and preferences; perceptions of the communities where they live, shop and work; satisfaction with various aspects of the region; resources that could most support local businesses; and challenges they face.

Water rate increase 32.59 percent average for PdC residents

A water rate increase will be effective in Prairie du Chien for service rendered on and after its next reading date, June 1. The city water department received authorization from the Public Service Commission and the common council approved the action at its meeting Tuesday, April 10.

According to a memo from Water Superintendent Larry Gates, the increase is necessary due to a 54.61 percent increase in gross plant investment and a 31.99 percent increase in operating expenses since the last water rate case was completed in 2009.
