Crawford County Drones On

Crawford County Emergency Management Director Jim Hackett sits behind the drone which will be used by emergency management and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department. The drone can take off from almost any small flat surface, including its carrying case. Once airborne, the drone automatically expands to about four feet across for a more stable flight.

Blackhawk wrestlers 

are Regional Champions

The 2017-2018 Prairie du Chien wrestling team continues to make history. On Saturday, Feb. 10, PDC hosted a WIAA Division 2 Regional for the first time in school history. They also won a WIAA Division 2 Regional for the first time in school history. 

On a day filled with plenty of excitement, the Blackhawk grapplers remained focused with their eyes on the prize. This was something the team had circled on the calendar at the beginning of the season.

Howard J. Gillitzer

Howard J. Gillitzer, 80, of Prairie du Chien, died on Wednesday, Feb. 7. 

He was born Feb. 3, 1938, to Carrie (Ocenosak) and Lawrence Gillitzer. Graduating from Campion in 1955, he entered the novitiate of the Order of the Holy Cross in Hastings, Neb. Two years later was sent to Our Lady of the Lake Seminary in Syracuse, Ind., and four years later to Crosier Seminary in Onamia, Minn. The next twenty years were spent in Administration, college financial aid and fundraising.

Prairie du Chien businesses make it easy for community to support animal shelter

Two local businesses are making it easy for community members to support the Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter in Prairie du Chien and shop at their retail establishments at the same time.

Nelson True Value has begun an ongoing program, Partnering for Pets, through which shoppers can help support the animal shelter. According to Bev Pozega, RABAS vice-president, customers at True Value who purchase pet products or store brand Wild Bird Food products will have 10 percent of those purchases gifted to the shelter.

“They’ve been trying to come up with a way to help us and we’re so grateful,” Pozega said. “This is a great way for customers who already buy their pet products from True Value to give back to us at the same time.”

PdC river wall damage to be assessed

Damage sustained to the river wall at Prairie du Chien’s Lawler Park last fall will be assessed by an engineering firm experienced in port facility repair needs, since the Prairie du Chien Common Council approved a professional services agreement (PSA) with the company Tuesday night.

According to City Planner Garth Frable, last year, a tow boat had docked along the river wall to take on water, which is a relatively common occurrence.

“The boat was tied to one of the large bollards affixed to the wall. After the tow boat left, city staff noted that the bollard had been partially pulled from the wall, which resulted in the wall bowing out,” Frable said.

River Ridge Dance Team 

performs at State Championship

On Saturday, Feb. 3, the River Ridge Dance Team attended the WACPC State Championship held at the La Crosse Center. The team competed in the Division 5 Pom category and placed 11th in the state for their division.

Qualifying and dancing at state for the dance team is a great accomplishment for such a young group of girls. The team this year consists of two freshmen, five sophomores, and five juniors.

Floyd L. Drake

Floyd L. Drake, 82, of Steuben, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 4, at the Good Samaritan Society in Fennimore.

 

He was born on March 27, 1935, on Nyland Ridge, Crawford County. The son of Clifford and Clara (Heisz) Drake. He married Delores Curtis on Sept. 10, 1955, at the Congregational Church in Steuben. Floyd was a lifetime farmer and avid fast pitch softball player.

Lessons in Learning - Copsey

“I feel such a close connection with my students and their families.  I want to see them succeed here at St. Mary’s and beyond.  They are all a huge part of my life,” Kelly Copsey, St. Mary’s teacher of 11 years, exclaimed.

Copsey, a native of Bloomington, attended St. Mary’s and River Ridge. She remembers having several teachers who brought positivity to her years of schooling, inspiring her to teach also.

She recalled, “During my senior year of high school, I did my school-to-work in the River Ridge Elementary. I knew at that point that I wanted to work with kids and help them to have a positive school experience just as I had.” Copsey attended the University of Wisconsin-Platteville to receive her teaching degree.
