Black ice a factor in crash with Bridgeport light pole

Black ice is reportedly the reason a driver struck a light pole with his vehicle Saturday morning, Dec. 30, according to a news release from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.

At 11:42 a.m., several reports were made to dispatch that a vehicle had struck a Bridgeport Township light pole on Highway 18 north of Selch Road. The fallen light pole blocked several lanes of traffic for about a half-hour.

Driver falls asleep, crashes on Highway 35

A driver fell asleep on his way to work last week and crashed his vehicle outside of Bloomington, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Department.

At about 5:50 p.m., the department was notified of a one-vehicle rollover on Highway 35 near Bloomington. Gerald Mayne, 39, of Lancaster, was driving north in his 2007 Suzuki XL7 SUV when, he said, he fell asleep and drove off the right side of the road. His SUV went through a fence and into a pasture, where he drove it a short distance before going back through the fence and striking an embankment, which caused the vehicle to go airborne. The very first baby born in the New Year is a celebrity of sorts—in a small town anyway.

Crossing Rivers Health’s 2018 New Year’s baby is a cherished little darling girl, Leah Elizabeth, born to parents Laci Meng and Job Nieland, of Monona, Iowa, on Monday, Jan. 1, at 1:01 p.m. She arrived weighing 7 pounds, 14 ounces, and measuring 20.5 inches in length.

Grandparents are Sherry and Dean Nieland, of McGregor; Robert Meng, of Bagley; Judy and Glen Sjoerdsma, of Randolph; and great-grandma is Birdie Meng, of Bagley. The baby is the first grandchild for either side of the family.
Though they were quiet while doting over their new daughter’s delicate features—including a warm complexion, a fair head of hair, chunky cheeks and wrinkly feet—both mom and dad agreed she’ll be spoiled.

Lucky the Carp Junior was available to be kissed for good luck throughout the coming year. At left, Tristan the Magician wowed his attentive audience.

The crowd gathers ‘round as Lucky the Carp is lowered into place at the stroke of midnight.

Smoked carp samples were enjoyed by many at the Early Bird Droppin’ of the Carp Party Sunday.
