Southwest Tech campus closed after a threat

The Southwest Wisconsin Technical College campus in Fennimore was closed Wednesday, Nov. 1, after what SWTC officials called “a direct threat to campus safety.”

William Howell, 42, of Livingston, was arrested for disorderly conduct after the reported threat resulted in the closing of the campus, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the sheriff’s office, Howell became angry at Facebook likes of his children Tuesday evening by a SWTC student, who Howell believed was having an affair with Howell’s estranged wife.

After sending his estranged wife Facebook and text messages through the night, including a threat to assault the SWTC student, Howell confronted his estranged wife Wednesday around 7 a.m. and tried to prevent her from taking their children to school that morning, according to the sheriff’s office.

Fennimore police and Grant County deputies responded to the threat, according to the Southwest Tech website.

Veterans Day observations

For 98 years, Americans have remembered those who served our country in uniform on Nov. 11—first as Armistice Day, and then, since 1954, as Veterans Day.

This year, Veterans Day will fall on a Saturday. As communities, schools, Legions and other organizations observe this special day, some events will take place on Saturday, Nov. 11, while others will happen on a weekday before or after the holiday. The public is welcome to attend all of the following.

•The Crawford County Veterans Day program will be held Nov. 11 at Century Hall in Wauzeka at 7 p.m., hosted by Post 446 of Steuben. Theresa Brewer, a Persian Gulf veteran from Boscobel, is the guest speaker for the evening.

•Seneca Schools has scheduled its Veterans Day program at the school for Thursday, Nov. 9, at 9 a.m.

Turkey, Tinsel and Tears Nov. 8 can help cope with loss of a loved one

The Infields’ last photo together from December 2013. Todd passed away unexpectedly in March 2014. His widow, Kristin, is now helping others cope with the loss of loved ones as she coordinates Gundersen Prairie du Chien’s Turkey, Tinsel and Tears program. Also pictured are their children, Riley and Ben.

Losing a loved one is never easy, whether it is an expected or unexpected death.

“Death is something we will all face and have to go through at some point in our lives,” said Kristin Infield, of Cassville, a registered radiologic tech at Gundersen Prairie du Chien Clinic.

She knows the pain of losing loved ones all too well. In March 2014, Kristin’s husband, Todd, an attorney in Lancaster, collapsed after his right carotid artery dissected and caused a stroke. He died a few days later on March 3, just days shy of his 45th birthday. To add to the pain, Todd’s father had passed away unexpectedly just three months earlier.

Traffic stop leads to arrest for fraud

On Oct. 31, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit conducted a traffic stop on a 2004 Mazda Mz6 on Highway 82 in Freeman Township. The deputy identified the driver as Sheila Ross, 43, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. Ross exhibited numerous signs of nervousness and deceit. After a driver’s license check, Ross was found to have a valid warrant for larceny out of the state of Iowa.

The deputy investigated further and discovered Ross to be in possession of numerous false identification cards, all in different names and states, but with Ross’ photo on them. The false IDs had corresponding blank checks in the same name. Ross had numerous other items relating to identification theft, fraud and larceny. It appeared Ross was committing these crimes in numerous cities and states.

Ross was arrested and transported to the Crawford County Jail for her warrants. The investigation into the fraud continues.

PdC High School musical a twist on classic fairy tales

By Correne Martin

“Into the Woods” may not be as well known as some of the musicals of the Prairie du Chien Drama Hawks’ past, but the fairy tales that make up the story are as classic as it can get. Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack and the Beanstalk are the familiar plots, while the story of The Baker and His Wife will be the thread that intertwines all the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault fairy tales together.

“Into the Woods,” by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, was actually made into a Disney movie adaptation, starring Meryl Streep, in 2014. But it never rose to the level of recognition some feel it deserved. The musical was also produced on Broadway in the late 1980s.

“It’s funny, but a little dark,” laughed first-year Director Eric Amweg. “By intermission, we get to ‘happily ever after.’ After intermission, a lot of stuff goes awry. It’s like a fairy tale soap opera. Everything does end up the way it’s supposed to end.”

Water aerobics an easy way to strengthen your body, improve your health

Water aerobics, instructed by Arlene Fernberg (far right), is offered to the public at Hoffman Hall, Monday through Friday at 8:15 a.m. All ages and abilities are welcome to participate periodically or every day. The first class is free. (Submitted photo)

By Correne Martin

Working out in the water is one of the most therapeutic activities a person can experience. Water aerobics builds cardio, strength and resistance all while being easy on the joints and in a cool and relaxing atmosphere. Such activity can also improve the cardiovascular and respiratory system in the same way as cycling or running but, of course, it’s low impact.

Some 15 to 21 participants take part in water aerobics at Hoffman Hall regularly. Class is offered from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. Monday through Friday in the facility’s Olympic-sized, handicapped accessible pool. Currently, a second class focused more on strengthening than full-fledged aerobics, is being considered for Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. New class members are invited to join any day they wish; the first class is always free.
Arlene Fernberg is the instructor and was new to the Prairie du Chien Parks and Recreation Department in September.

By Ted Pennekamp

Drones are being used for many purposes these days, some of which include farming applications like monitoring field health, personal recreation and videos, getting aerial views of sporting events or concerts, delivery of small items, keeping an eye on wildlife, and for mapping and archeological surveys.

Evermore, drones are also becoming a vital tool for first responders, fire departments and law enforcement. In fact, Crawford County Emergency Management is eyeing the possibility of getting a drone in the near future.
