Prairie spikers 

have Senior Night and Pink Night

Prairie du Chien volleyball had an exciting night on Thursday night. It was Senior Night and Pink Night. The team honored its seniors and did some fund-raising and acknowledgments for breast cancer awareness. There was great participation.  

The JV (Fr/So) team won their match two games to one and ended their season with a conference record of 9-1.  The varsity reserve fell to a strong Richland Center team three games to none.

Numbers continue to show need for annual Clean Sweep

Crawford County collected 41,293 pounds of televisions alone at its 2016 Clean Sweep collection. The year before that, 49,253 were accrued, according to the Crawford County Land Conservation Department (LCD).

Even at $5 per TV disposed, collection of these and other electronics to be scrapped and recycled has become a need for county consumers. That’s why the chemical clean sweep, electronics recycling and household prescription drug collection has become such a desired event for over a decade in Crawford County.

For 2017, the Clean Sweep will be Friday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Crawford County Highway Shop, one mile south of Seneca. This offering is essentially free to county residents who can provide proof of residency.

Fire prevention and safety are important topics for young children to learn and understand. Doing their part to ensure local youth are aware, the Prairie du Chien Fire Department visits Prairie du Chien public and private elementary students every Fire Prevention Week to present a light-hearted yet straightforward program. The hope is that the opportunity can help remind children and their families about smoke alarm battery changing, not playing with matches or lighters, dialing 911, home escape planning and practicing, and other critical, potentially life-saving matters.

The theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 8-14, is “Every Second Counts: Plan Two Ways Out.” According to the National Fire Prevention Association, nearly half of all Americans have not developed a home fire escape plan. Of those that have, one-quarter have never practiced it.

National polka star coming to PdC

Mollie B, at the Frankenmuth Summer Music Fest 2016, will be showcasing her vocal talents, dancing and performing on the button accordion, trumpet, banjo, bass horn and drums while in Prairie du Chien for Oktoberfest.

The musical entertainment at this year’s Oktoberfest is bigger and better than ever. The lineup is so top-notch that plans for Saturday’s festival at the Memorial Gardens include a music tent, where national polka star Mollie B will be the headliner. She will join her father’s ensemble, the Jim Busta Band, and they will trade the stage with the 20-member La Crosse Oktoberfest Singers throughout the day.

Mollie Busta is the host of RFD-TV’s “Mollie B Polka Party,” in which she sings, dances and plays  a variety of different instruments. The “Mollie B Polka Party” currently airs in over 55 million homes on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m.and Saturdays at 9 p.m.

Two-vehicle crash on Hwy. 61

On Friday, Oct. 6, at 1:10 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was notified of a two-vehicle accident on Highway 61 with no injuries and no blockage in Scott Township.

Jean G. Troxel, 49, Soldiers Grove, was traveling southbound on Highway 61 in a 2004 Buick. The Troxel vehicle was traveling behind a 2013 Subaru being operated by Brenda A. Foust, 52, East Dubuque, Ill. The Foust vehicle was slowing down for a vehicle making a left turn onto Long Ago Lane. The Troxel vehicle was unable to avoid the Foust vehicle rear-ending it.  

Both drivers claimed no injuries at the scene and both vehicles were able to be driven from the scene.

Crawford County to get FEMA funding

Steuben received major flooding following the July 19 storm. A county road in Steuben was just one item of public infrastructure that was severely damaged in the county. President Trump on Tuesday gave his major disaster declaration for Crawford and 10 other counties.

 

County to get FEMA storm damage funding

Crawford County will receive $353,476 in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding to help cover the costs of damage to public infrastructure as a result of the severe storm of July 19.

Seneca swept host Wauzeka-Steuben three games to none in a Ridge and Valley volleyball match Tuesday night. 

Seneca won by scores of 25-12, 25-10 and 25-8. 

The win gives Seneca at least a share of the conference crown as they improved to 5-0 in the Ridge and Valley. Wauzeka-Steuben is now 3-3 in conference action.
