Crawford County bird tests positive for West Nile

Crawford County Public Health was notified last week that a dead crow found in Crawford County tested positive for West Nile virus. Surveillance for the mosquito-transmitted virus began May 1.

According to Crawford County Health Director Gloria Wall, residents observed the crow and noticed it was sickly, so they reported it to the state dead bird hotline. When it actually died, the bird was sent in for assessment.
The positive bird means that residents of Crawford County need to be more vigilant in their personal protective measures to prevent mosquito bites to prevent West Nile disease.

West Nile virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes acquire the virus by feeding on infected birds.

Local soldiers to deploy with mobilizing Iowa National Guard

The Iowa Army National Guard is mobilizing 390 soldiers based in four Iowa cities for deployment to the U.S. Central Command, which could assign them to Iraq, Afghanistan, North Africa and other regions.

The troops are members of the 248th Aviation Support Battalion, which includes helicopter maintainers, helicopter test pilots, and logistical support personnel.

Jason Hager, of Prairie du Chien, is among the men and women deploying, in addition to Steve Gray and Michael Spring, both northeast Iowa residents who work at Pattison Sand Company.

The soldiers are based in Boone, Muscatine, Davenport and Waterloo, and they represent the Iowa National Guard’s largest single-unit deployment since 2010, according to information Col. Gregory Hapgood Jr., the Guard’s public affairs officer at Camp Dodge, gave the Des Moines Register.

The investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) continues regarding the shooting incident near Mount Hope involving a Grant County Sheriff’s Department deputy and a suspect who was shot and died as a result.

River Ridge beat visiting Cochrane-Fountain City in a nonconference back and forth, high scoring football game in Bloomington Friday night. 

The Timberwolves got on the board first with a 51-yard run by Tyler Millin and a 2-point pass from Cole Crubel to Ryan Redman to grab an 8-0 lead in the first quarter. 

Blake Crubel scored on a 20-yard run and the 2-point run with 8:25 to play in the first period to increase the margin to 16-0.

Merton Dale Cota, Sr.

Merton Dale Cota, Sr. dedicated his life to serving the U.S. government; spending four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, 18 years in the U.S. Air Force and 24 years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He received numerous awards for his hard work throughout his long career. Recognized for his sense of duty, responsibility and organization, and respected by his peers, he retired on Dec. 30, 2016.

Bridgeport barn destroyed in blaze

The rubble from a barn fire was still smoldering Thursday along Vineyard Road in the town of Bridgeport. The Rural Bridgeport/Prairie du Chien Township Fire Department was called Wednesday at about 7:30 p.m. to the Scott Michel farm. The barn was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. There were no injuries and no livestock died as a result of the fire. The barn and some farm machinery, including a baler and a tractor, were destroyed as were some round hay bales. Gays Mills man arrested for marijuana possession

On Monday, Sept. 18, at 5:30 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department K9 Deputy initiated contact with the operator of a Chevrolet Tracker in the village of Gays Mills.

The operator of the vehicle was identified as Timothy Copus, 45, Gays Mills. Contact was initiated because the deputy noticed the vehicle displayed false plates and the deputy had prior knowledge that Copus did not hold a valid driver’s license.

As a result of the deputy’s contact, Copus was arrested. Charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, operating while under the influence of a restricted controlled substance (second offense), and operating while revoked were referred to the district attoney’s office.

K9 Breck was utilized for an open free air sniff and he alerted to the presence of an odor of a controlled substance.

This case currently remains under investigation.
