SMRT Bus Service receives recognition, continues growth

The Scenic Mississippi River Transit (SMRT) Bus Service has recently been recognized by Wisconsin Rural Partners as one of Wisconsin’s Top Rural Development Initiatives in 2017 because ridership continues to increase and a rider survey shows that 100 percent of riders are either satisfied or very satisfied.

Barbara Johanna Kostrau, 90, formerly of Bagley, died on Thursday, Aug. 31. 

 

She was born Berlin, Germany on Dec. 8, 1926. Barbara grew up as the eldest of four children in Berlin, Germany, immigrated to the United States in 1958, and became a U.S. citizen in 1965.

Gilda J. Welsh

 

Gilda J. Welsh, 86, of Oconomowoc and formerly of Fennimore and Prairie du Chien, died on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital. 

 

She was born on June 11, 1931, in Marion Township Grant Co., the daughter of Lou and Elizabeth (Bender) Freymiller. Gilda was united in marriage to Loren Welsh on Sept. 5, 1956, at the Marion Church.

Worn and tattered flags can be disposed

On Monday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m., the Crawford County American Legion will again hold its annual flag disposal program. This program is held in conjunction with the legion’s annual meeting.

The William Schoville Post 220 of Soldiers Grove will sponsor the program this year in Soldiers Grove.

Ken McCormick, Crawford County American Legion commander, asks all Crawford County residents who have or are flying American Flags to take a look at them and, if they are worn or tattered, please turn them in so they can be properly retired.

Old, worn flags may be left with any American Legion member or at the Crawford County Veterans Service Office, before Friday, Sept. 22.

Readstown man charged with having meth

A 39-year-old Readstown man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of methamphetamine (repeater).

Jeremy Phinney faces up to a $10,000 fine and 3.5 years in prison if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, on Aug. 20, at 1:20 a.m., two Crawford County Sheriff’s deputies approached a man who was near the Lions Shelter at the village park in Soldiers Grove. As they approached, the man immediately got on his cell phone.

As the deputies were speaking to the man, later identified as Phinney, he was sweating and appeared extremely nervous.

The Crawford County Law Enforcement Center confirmed that Phinney was on probation for narcotics convictions.

The deputies then performed a search and found a plastic baggie containing a large “chunk” of meth, the complaint said.

Man accused of intent to deliver meth

A 27-year-old Lone Rock man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine.

Brandon Bird-Duell faces up to a $25,000 fine and 12.5 years in prison if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, on Aug. 24, a Crawford County Sheriff’s deputy pulled into the Mobil Station in the village of Ferryville.

The deputy noted a man standing next to his motorcycle. The man (Bird-Duell) eventually admitted to the deputy that he did not have a valid motorcycle endorsement on his driver’s license, nor did he have proper registration for the motorcycle.

Bird-Duell then consented to a search, the complaint said. A small, clear, plastic baggie containing meth was found.

Gays Mills man charged with possession of meth

A 28-year-old Gays Mills man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of methamphetamine.

Joshua R. Dull faces up to 3.5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, a search of Dull’s vehicle following a traffic stop revealed three syringes which contained liquid meth. Also found was a partial package of pseudoephedrine pills.
