Steven Turner, 67, passed away on Monday, Nov. 6, 2023.

Visitation was Thursday, Nov. 16, followed by services at Lutheran Church of Hope, Ankeny.

Burial was at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.

Visit the Festival Tree of Lights this weekend

The holiday spirit is in the air at the former St. Mary's Convent at 502 S. Second Street in Guttenberg, where visitors will be greeted with a glittering display of decorated Christmas trees.

This first-ever  Festival Tree of  Lights was organized by Friends of St. Mary's of Guttenberg to raise funds to preserve the convent building. The public is invited to view the trees and leave a bid  if they like a favorite tree. Bids will be accepted in $5 increments.

Saturday, Nov. 25 Guttenberg Chamber plans holiday events, Christmas parade

The Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce has announced plans to kick off the Christmas season on Saturday, Nov. 25, with   fun family events, including the annual Merchant Open House, a German Market, parade, and more. The event coincides with   "Small Business Saturday," a nationwide observance to promote hometown shopping. 

Participating merchants will be offering special sales, refreshments and door prizes that day as they welcome customers shopping for the holidays.

Daniel T. Goerdt

Daniel T. Goerdt, 64, of Holy Cross passed away Friday, Nov. 10, 2023, at Mercy One Hospital in Dubuque.

Funeral services were Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Holy Cross, conducted by Rev. Tyler Raymond. Visitation was before services at the church.

Inurnment will be held at a later date.

Sharon K. Beatty, 80, of Guttenberg passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023, at the Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg.

A private inurnment will be held at a later date at Mount Harmony Cemetery outside of Garber.

Norma J. (Graybill) Fatchett

Norma Jean (Graybill) Fatchett of Clinton passed away Oct. 25, 2023, at her son’s home in Camanche.

Jean was born at home Aug. 2, 1933, to Emmet and Bernita (Bockman) Graybill. She attended Millville County School

through the eighth grade. Jean graduated from Guttenberg High School in 1952.

The Clayton Ridge Education Association (CREA) has chosen longtime school board member Mike Finnegan as their 2023 CREA Friend of Education. He was honored at a reception held in the Guttenberg Campus Cafeteria on Nov. 15.

"Mike was nominated for his support of students at various events; additionally, his presence is well-known across the whole district. He stops in to see staff in all areas," said Nicole DeGidio, CREA President.

Lockmaster Jay Grimsled

The United States Army Corps of Engineers recently hired Jay Grimsled as Lockmaster of Lock and Dam 10 in Guttenberg.  He has replaced Sam Mathiowetz, who held the position from 2015-2023. 

Jay is from Seneca, Wis., and has worked for the lock and dam system for the past 31 years, beginning his career as a laborer.
