City to enforce ban on fireworks displays

With many July Fourth community celebrations cancelled due to COVID 19, Iowa retailers have noticed an increase in  the purchase of fireworks by individuals. 

Guttenberg Police Chief George Morteo reminds residents that the department will be enforcing the city's ban on the use of consumer display fireworks.

Hansel authors first book: "Handstands on the Beach"

As the saying goes – everyone has a story. Pastor Penny Hansel, now retired, is putting the finishing touches on her autobiography, Handstands on the Beach. The adventuresome, age-defying woman has worn many hats throughout the years and has never shied away from a challenge. Hansel commented, "I am retired for the fourth and final time!"

Allen Real Estate Company of Monona has recently expanded its business with the purchase of Rightway Realty in Guttenberg. Nathan Trappe, real estate broker for Allen Real Estate, told The Press, "The late Gary Willman's father started Rightway Realty back in 1958. Gary eventually took over the business and made it into the successful brokerage firm it is today."

Superintendent gives update on plans

"I want to update the public regarding the re-opening of school facilities and activities. Currently, baseball and softball seasons are underway with several guidelines to offer safety for players, coaches, and fans.

Charles Robert Bries, 76, slipped peacefully from this world at Kavanagh (Hospice) House on June 12, 2020, a mere 10 months after the passing of his dear wife. He abandoned his earthly existence with her ashes beside him, his eldest daughter’s hand in his, while listening to the lyrics he often sang to his children...”I want to go home. I want to go home. Lord, how I want to go home.”

Visitation and funeral services were Friday, June 19, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Guttenberg.

Lester Lee Groth, 78, of Garber, passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2020, at his residence.

Visitation was Sunday, June 14, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood and before the services at the church on Monday.

Funeral services were Monday, June 15, at the former Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elkport, conducted by Pastor Roland Waterman.

Donald W. Welsh, 61, of Dubuque died June 10, 2020, at Manor Care in Dubuque.

A celebration of life will be held Aug. 8, beginning at 2 p.m. at Bootleggers in Millville.

Don was born May 20, 1959, at Xavier Hospital in Dubuque to Bill and Rose (Hunemuller) Welsh. He graduated from Guttenberg High School.

A father-daughter hiking expedition at Big Springs Nature Park, located along the Great River Road just north of Guttenberg, has revealed a rare fossil find. "Big Springs,” as the locals prefer to call it, is a quiet, hidden natural treasure used by outdoor enthusiasts for day-hiking, picnicking, bird watching or peaceful meditation.

Council tightens city leash law

Guttenberg city council members  updated city code regarding animals running at large when they met in regular session on Monday evening, May 11. 

At the council table were Mayor Bill Frommelt, City Manager Denise Schneider and councilmembers Mick Pierce, Austin Greve, Fred Schaub, and Virginia Saeugling. Councilmember Jane Parker participated via teleconference.

Mary “Edna” Cook

Mary “Edna” Cook, 92, of Guttenberg, passed away May 22, 2020 while residing at the Good Samaritan Society of Waukon.

A private service for family will be held on June 21st at 1:30 p.m. at Elkader East Side Cemetery.

Edna was born on July 5, 1927. She was the second oldest of four children. She grew up in Georgetown, SC and has a surviving sister, Barbara Jones, who still resides there.
