Small town grocery stores play a major role in our rural communities. They provide a vital source of nutrition, employ our neighbors, and add to tax revenue that supports our community. Rural grocery stores are also economic drivers and community builders.

Clayton Ridge board hires food management firm

At its regular monthly meeting on May 14, the Clayton Ridge School Board accepted a bid from a food management company to handle school lunches for the 2020-21 school year. The district currently employs a staff to prepare lunches.

The unanimous vote to make the change came after a study by the school district. A representative from OPAA Food Management, Inc. answered questions via Zoom about the company's services and the transition process. An assurance was made that OPAA will employ current staff members.

Danny Carrier was born in 1937. His parents were Louis and Hilda Carrier. He attended and graduated from St. Mary's School in Guttenberg. Carrier told The Press, "I used to get in trouble for entertainment. I had one brother, Jerome, and four sisters, Pat, Mary Ann, Winifred “Winnie” and Laura. I was the youngest. I had a newspaper route delivering the Des Moines Register."

Local Memorial Day program modified due to pandemic

Guttenberg's traditional Memorial Day program featuring a parade, band music and speakers will not be held this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. 

Dennis Hanna of the local American Legion Post, which coordinates the event, said that although the program was cancelled, organizers want to honor all veterans with a brief acknowledgement of their service and sacrifice on Monday, May 25.

The Clayton County 5C Community Collaboration Council is a volunteer coalition that concentrates on drug prevention and education in Clayton County. The coalition is comprised of representatives from different sectors including substance abuse, business, healthcare, law enforcement, schools, youth, parents, faith and media.

Joyce M. Smith

Joyce Marie Smith, 74, of Marion passed away on May 11, 2020. 

Family will be holding a private graveside service with burial in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A public memorial service will be held at a later date.

Joyce was born on Dec. 22, 1945, the daughter of Vernon and Martha (Gull) Horstman.

Daniel L. Westemeier

Daniel Leo Westemeier, 76, of Dubuque, died Tuesday, May 12, 2020, at the Unity Point Health-Finley Hospital in Dubuque.

Our dear husband, father, and grandfather deserves a beautiful tribute. However, in this unknown time with COVID-19 pandemic, having a public visitation is not possible. Please be with us in prayer. A celebration of Dan’s life will be held at a later date. 

Burial was in Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque.

Leroy “Doug” Wachendorf

With great sadness we announce the death of Leroy “Doug” Wachendorf, 60, on Tuesday, May 12, 2020, at his home with loved ones by his side.

A celebration of Doug’s life will be held for his family and friends at a later time, when it is safe to do so.

Doug was born in Guttenberg, on Nov. 3, 1959, the son of Roy and Hedda Wachendorf.

Gloria G. Priem

Gloria Gayle Priem, 86, of Garnavillo, died Monday, May 4, 2020, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital in Guttenberg.

Due to the COVID-19 concerns, there will be a private family service and interment. The family plans to hold a public memorial at a later date.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo.
