Nine of twelve Bries brothers serve in the military

"Bustling" would be a good word to describe the home of the late Arnold and Regina Bries. The hard-working couple raised 16 children, four girls and 12 boys, on a farmstead in rural Clayton County. Nine of the 12 boys went on to serve in the military. 

Virgil Bries, the couple's son, told The Press, "We didn't have much choice. The draft was going on at the time. When you turned 18 you signed up."

Janice L. Ulbrich

Janice Lea (Ludovissy) Ulbrich of Guttenberg, died on June 26, 2019, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Visitation was June 30, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Funeral services were Monday, July 1, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Guttenberg and one hour before services at the church. God, family and friends were very important to her.

Debra D. Rodenberg

Debra Dee Rodenberg, 53, of Garber, died Thursday, June 27, 2019, surrounded by her family. 

Visitation was Monday, July 1, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

There will be a private service for family and relatives.

Scherbring family is 2019 Knights of Columbus Family of the Year


The Madonna and Donald Scherbring family were recently selected as the 2019 Iowa Knights of Columbus Family of the Year during the Knights of Columbus State Convention held in Des Moines on May 4. Celebrate our nation's birthday!

Hot and humid weather has arrived in Iowa, signalling the beginning of summer and the arrival of the annual celebration of our country's birthday. Guttenberg, Garnavillo and Colesburg residents invite everyone to enjoy their parades, festivities and fireworks. 

Garnavillo's celebration will be held on Thursday, July 4, while Guttenberg and Colesburg will offer family fun and more on Saturday, July 6. Look inside for details on all the festivities.

School board accepts resignation of Principal Andy Peterson

The Clayton Ridge Community School board accepted the resignation of Andy Peterson, principal and athletic director, when it met in regular session on June 10.

Peterson has been employed as a principal at Clayton Ridge since 2015. He has accepted a position as principal at Carver Elementary School in Dubuque. The board also accepted the resignation of his spouse, Leeann Peterson, a teacher associate.

Robert Walke

Robert “Bob” Walke, 77, of Guttenberg, died Wednesday, June 19, 2019.

Visitation was Sunday, June 23, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Monday, June 24, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Harold McMillin.

Surveys aid in addressing social determinants in rural health

A survey process that began this spring is assisting area health care providers with information to address social determinants in rural health.  

The survey is currently being provided to patients at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital & Clinics (GMHC), three Cornerstone Family Practice clinics, Emergency Department, Patient Care Unit and Family Resource Center.
