Visitation was Sunday, May 5, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota.

Funeral services were Monday, May 6, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, conducted by Rev. Charles Fladung.

City awarded $344,640 grant for 5th St. truck route

The City of Guttenberg has been awarded a $344,640 federal grant that will be used to change a truck route in north Guttenberg from Third Street to Fifth Street. The project is slated to begin in  fiscal year 2022-23.

The award came as the result of a successful grant application written by City Manager Denise Schneider.

Robert Vavra has always had a passion for the river. As a young lad growing up in Swisher, Vavra enjoyed spending his time outdoors in and along the banks of the Mississippi River, canoeing, swimming, and snake, frog and crawdad hunting.

Berniece Irene Wilhelmina (Glawe) Johnson, 95, of Elkader passed away Monday, March 25, 2019, at the Elkader Care Center. 

Visitation was Sunday, March 31, at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home in Elkader and before services at the reception hall.

Funeral services were Monday, April 1, at Johnson’s Reception Hall in Elkader conducted by Pastor Bruce Hanson.

April is National Parkinson's Awareness Month: Parkinson's disease is a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement. Symptoms often start gradually, starting with a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand. Tremors are common, but the disorder will also cause stiffness or slowing of movement.

Bootleggers River Tavern, located at 36835 Noble Road, just off Highway 52 in Millville, has been undergoing renovations and is getting ready to re-open following recent flood damage.

The new look will be unveiled on Friday, April 26, at 11 a.m. Singer, guitarist and songwriter Bruce Bryant, Carpe Diem, will provide the entertainment.

Second river crest expected this week

A second spring crest on the Mississippi River is expected this week and is predicted to top the one earlier this month at Guttenberg.

As of Monday morning, the U.S. Weather Service in LaCrosse, Wis., was predicting a crest of 20 feet at Guttenberg on Friday, April 26. That is approximately five inches higher than the  crest of 19.56 feet on April 5 this year.
