Ivan Ewald Hardt, 86 of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital.

A service will be held at a later date at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids.

Interment will be at the Garnavillo Cemetery.

Nicholas J. Westhoff

Nicholas John Westhoff, 32, of Guttenberg, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018, at home surrounded by his family.

Visitation was Sunday, Sept. 2, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Monday, Sept. 3, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.

Farming heritage featured at Plagman Barn this weekend

The Northeast Iowa Farm Antique Association's 37th annual Plagman Barn Show Days will be held Sept 14, 15, and 16. 

The Association is dedicated to the historical preservation, as well as the education of area youth, of the area's farm and home practices and techniques. 

Steam-powered engines, single-cylinder engines, and horse-powered equipment highlight the three-day fall show. Demonstrations are held daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Freedom Rock coming to Guttenberg

Several months ago, an application was submitted and accepted, and Clayton County was approved as a site for a Freedom Rock. A small committee has been established and is in the early stages of planning. The Freedom Rock will be located in Guttenberg; however, it will be a Clayton County landmark.

Hundreds of classic cars will converge on downtown Guttenberg this Saturday morning, Sept. 15, for the start of the 21st annual River Park Cruisers car show, cruise and dance. 

The popular event is the culmination of months of planning by the Cruisers. The day begins early as volunteers close downtown streets in time for car registration that runs from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The first 200 cars to register will receive a dash plaque.

On Sept. 11, voters in the Northeast Iowa Community Collelge district will be asked to decide whether to continue the current tax levy for the school.

Dr. Liang Chee Wee, president of Northeast Iowa Community College, visited the Guttenberg Rotary Club in August to talk about the school's accomplishments and ask  voters to continue their support by "investing in people through us."

Council awards contract for pool; discusses food trucks

At a special meeting on Monday, Aug. 27, the Guttenberg city council accepted the low bid for the Guttenberg pool project and approved final plans for the project which is expected to begin this fall.

  Mayor Bill Frommelt led councilmembers Austin Greve, Fred Schaub, Virginia Saeugling and Jane Parker through the agenda. City Manager Denise Schneider and  City Attorney Michael Schuster were also present.

A look at Guttenberg's municipal marina

The Guttenberg Municipal Marina, located along the Mississippi River just south of Lock and Dam 10, has attracted boaters and visitors to the community since its dedication in 2011. 

Jim Zerbe, a seasonal city employee who has looked after the facility for the past five years, believes the marina is a great asset to the community and says its economic impact goes far beyond the rental fees collected.

Richard "Dick" Edgar Duwe Jr., 78, of Garnavillo, was called home by his heavenly father Friday, Aug. 24, 2018, on the family farm near Clayton Center of an apparent heart attack.

Visitation was Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo and before services at the church.

Funeral services were Thursday, Aug. 30, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Gary Hatcher.
