CRHS graduation rate explained

A recent article in the Telegraph Herald raised concerns over education at Clayton Ridge when it listed the school’s graduation rate at 81.01 percent, nearly 10 percent lower than the statewide average of 91 percent. In fact, according to Superintendent Shane Wahls, in 2017 Clayton Ridge High School graduated 100 percent of its senior class.

Three new providers have joined the staff at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital and Clinics in recent months. "We are thrilled to welcome these new providers to Guttenberg Municipal Hospital and Clinics and to the community at large. With the addition of these providers, we will continue to provide the highest quality in healthcare to our community but will be able to offer additional services or additional hours," said GMH Interim CEO Kelly Dybvig.

Michael R. Fricke

Michael R. Fricke, 56, of Nora Springs passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, surrounded by his family after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Visitation was Monday, April 23, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City.

Graveside services will be held at a later date.

Sandra J. Kann, 80, died April 11, 2018, following a brief, but courageous battle with lung cancer.

Funeral services were Saturday, April 21, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Harold McMillin. Visitation was before services at the funeral home.

Inurnment was at the Guttenberg City Cemetery.

City council proceeds with pool project, sets budget hearing

The Guttenberg city council at its regular monthly meeting on April 9 moved forward on the pool project, set a hearing date to amend the budget and approved the first reading of an ordinance change that will reduce the cost of a golf cart permit.

Mayor Bill Frommelt led councilmembers Mick Pierce, Austin Greve, Fred Schaub, and Virginia Saeugling through the evening's agenda; also on hand were city manager Denise Schneider and city attorney Michael Schuster.

Dean of Students reports on successful year

A new position was created last fall at Clayton Ridge Community School, allowing for the addition of Dean of Students and At Risk Coordinator Wade Marlow to school staff. Marlow assists with the district’s positive behavior intervention support expectations for students, which are that they be ready, respectful, responsible and safe. He models these expectations and provides positive reinforcement for the large majority of students who are meeting expectations.

Donald Francis Berns, 81, of Garnavillo, died Monday, April 9, 2018, at Elkader Care Center in Elkader.

Funeral services were Monday, April 16, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries. Visitation was before services at the funeral home.

Interment was at the Garnavillo Community Cemetery.

Constance “Connie” Sylvester, 71, of Elkader, died Thursday, April 5, 2018, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Visitation was Monday, April 9, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo and before services at the church.

Funeral services were Tuesday, April 10, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkader.

Miner's Creek bridge replacement set to begin

The bridge that crosses Miner's Creek in the Guttenberg city limits is scheduled to be taken down this week in the first step of a bridge replacement project. City officials expect that the bridge will be demolished by Friday, April 13, weather permitting.

The bridge is located on Garber Road just west of Highway 52 at the south Guttenberg city limits.
