Group addresses bikability in city


In Oct. 2020, a bike audit committee was formed to address bicycle safety in Guttenberg. The committee inventoried existing bike racks, considered directional pavement sharrows, has plans to create a bike route map, investigate the possibility of a bike share/rental system for the general public, and add additional way-finding signs for easier navigation and bike route connectivity. The City of Guttenberg invited Healthy HometownSM Powered by Wellmark, to assist with identifying opportunities for enhancing bikeability in the community. The Wellmark program uses evidence-based, proven tools and techniques that help make the healthy choice the easy choice. The program's purpose is to prompt healthy lifestyles through changes to the environment, which in turn can result in improved economic stability.

City council approves new police car

The Guttenberg city council at its regular monthly meeting on May 10 ordered a new car for the police department, granted salary and wage increases to non-union personnel and heard an update on city projects.

Mayor Bill Frommelt led the council through the evening's agenda. On hand for the meeting were council members Mick Pierce, Austin Greve, Fred Schaub, Virginia Saeugling and Jane Parker, and City Manager Denise Schneider.

O.W. "Bill" Kellogg

Former Guttenberg resident and Press publisher Bill Kellogg died April 29, 2021, at age 95 in St. Louis, Mo. after a brief illness.

Oliver William “Bill” Kellogg was born March 28, 1926, in Humboldt to Oliver Fletcher and Erma (Gossard) Kellogg. He was raised in Iowa, Wisconsin and Nebraska, and attended several schools as the family followed work during the Great Depression.

Farmers Markets can be a great contribution to communities by improving the availability of fresh, nutritious, affordable food to area residents. Markets can also contribute to local economies by providing growers and other producers an opportunity to sell their product directly to consumers.

Planning underway for Stars & Stripes

Planning for the 2021 Stars & Stripes festivities is underway by the Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce. The annual community celebration of our nation’s independence will be held on Saturday, July 3. 

Activities will be held in Ingleside Park north of Clayton Ridge school. "We will have a carnival this year, beanbag tournament, parade, and fireworks at dusk over the river," said Brandie Tomkins, Chamber director.

Umbrella Arts River of Music 2021 summer concert series

Guttenberg Umbrella Arts members are once again hosting their popular River of Music (ROM) concert series. All concerts are free and held on Friday evenings beginning June 4 through Aug. 7, from 6-8 p.m., with the exception of July 2, which will be held from 6-9 p.m., kicking off Guttenberg's Stars and Stripes celebration.  Musicians will perform under the band shelter located in Ingleside Park at the intersection of China Street and North River Park Drive.

The Guttenberg Library Foundation is pleased to announce it has scheduled its 2021 Book Sale for Friday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the library. Donated materials will be accepted until Friday, May 28. Due to COVID concerns, there will be no accompanying bake sale this year.

Four projects planned at GMHC this summer

Improvements at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital & Clinics will involve four construction projects this summer. 

Plans call for the remodeling of the operating room suites and areas of Cornerstone Family Practice Clinic. Also scheduled is an upgrade to the hospital's MRI machine, which will require construction on the north side of the building. The fourth project is landscaping on the south side of the hospital, which will include new sod.

Nolan S. Hollaway

Nolan Scott Hollaway, 13, of Guttenberg, completed his earthly journey on April 19, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, in the loving arms of his mother.

To honor Nolan’s life, a private family service is being held at a later date.

Arrangements were handled by The Tri-State Cremation Center.
