Carter J. Cannon, 18, of Hawkeye, died tragically Saturday, April 3, 2021, rural Sumner, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. 

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, April 16, at the Arlington Community Event Center conducted by Rev. Ginny Olson. A celebration of life will follow the memorial service at the Event Center from 3-8 p.m. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye is assisting Carter’s family.

Novelist publishes fourth book

Brian Spielbauer, author of four successful novels with another one in the works, was born and raised in Guttenberg. He currently resides in Fayette, Mo., with his wife, Jennifer, and their two daughters, Sydney and Allie. He is employed as an agent at Endeavor Agency in Fayette. The sports enthusiast also coaches Fayette's high school basketball team and was a past college basketball coach and athletic director. He also has a passion for helping people attain new executive positions. "I like coaching and mentoring and hope to inspire more people to tell their stories through my writing," commented Spielbauer.

An independent film: The Final 19: The Dan Hefel POW Story, directed by Tim Breitbach, will be presented at the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival on April 18 at 4:30 p.m. in the Julien Dubuque Hotel Ballroom and on April 20 at 1:30 p.m. at the Five Flags Civic Center in Dubuque. Since 2012 the film festival has been enriching the community and uniting cultures through the education and promotion of the arts through independent film.

"Yard of the Month" program this summer

The City of Guttenberg has announced a "Yard of the Month" program for city residents this coming season. The first round of nominations will be due May 17 with the award to be presented in June. 

The Yard of the Month is sponsored by the City in conjunction with the Umbrella Arts Committee. The purpose is to recognize residents who have improved or maintained their yard and whose yard has a positive aesthetic appeal.

Mary Ann (Nelsen) Stegen, long time resident of Strawberry Point, passed away on March 30, 2021, in Lincoln, Neb., of complications from a broken hip incurred in a fall on Dec. 28.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., on Friday, April 9, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Strawberry Point and one hour before services at the church on Saturday morning.

Robert Francis Hoffmann, 91, of Guttenberg, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.

Due to COVID-19 concerns there will be a private family service. There will be a public memorial service on Saturday, June 26, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg. The family will greet friends an hour before the service at the church.

Inurnment will be at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Guttenberg following Mass.

Lawrence C. Linderbaum, 100, passed away on March 23, 2021, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital surrounded by family.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 9, from 5-7 p.m. at the Leonard – Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Monona and one hour before services at the funeral home on Saturday. Due to COVID-19, masks and social distancing are required.

Funeral services will be Saturday, April 10, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, conducted by Rev. Lynn Noel.

Living a van-tastic life on the open road

Molly Falck was born and raised in Arlington. She grew up a few miles away from her boyfriend and traveling companion, Clayton Schaefer, when he and his parents were living in the area when Clayton was a young boy. The 23-year-old studied massage therapy in Anamosa, at Carlson College of Massage Therapy, and then worked at Hands in Harmony before traveling. She was a seasonal massage therapist in California and Colorado while living in her first van.

County vaccine update and wait list information

The Iowa Governor’s Office announced that effective on Monday, April 5, all Iowans became eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. 

Depending on the vaccine manufacturer, individuals age 16 or older could be eligible. Pfizer is currently approved for use in those age 16 and older; while Moderna and Johnson & Johnson are approved for those over age 18. Previously eligible groups, including those over age 65 and those with high-risk health conditions, will remain vaccine eligible.
