Patricia Niehaus, 89, of Guttenberg, died Sunday, March 21, 2021, at Guttenberg Care Center.

Burial will be held at a later date.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Pat was born the daughter of George and Pearl (Chettinger) Auer on Oct. 11, 1931, in Garnavillo.

Curtis E. Kraus

Curtis Edward Kraus, 66, of Postville, died Sunday, March 21, 2021, at his home in rural Postville.

Visitation was Friday, March 26, at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Monona and before services at the church on Saturday.

Funeral services were Saturday, March 27, at St. John Lutheran Church in Luana, conducted by Pastor Jeremy Wolfe.

Sharon Berns passed away peacefully on March 25, 2021, with her family by her side.

Given the current pandemic and in respect for her dedication to community health, there will be a private graveside service for immediate family at St. Joseph Cemetery in Garnavillo.

Eunice M. Zearley

Eunice Mae Zearley, 98, of Guttenberg, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 26, 2021, at the Guttenberg Care Center.

Private family graveside services will be held.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Eunice was born on Nov. 22, 1922, to Raymond and Pearl (Henry) Zearley.

Historic preservationist reflects on restoration career

Local historic preservationist Gary Goyette, who plans to move to New Mexico in the near future, recently looked back on his career and his time in Guttenberg.

Goyette was born in 1945 in Wausau, Wis. He was raised in Hartford and Mayville, Wis., during his formative years. His interest in architecture and historic buildings became a focus after he graduated from high school in 1964.

County Board of Health issues reminder

The Clayton County Board of Health last week issued a reminder t0 county residents, towns and businesses about the importance of continuing efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19. 

"These continued efforts to protect the community from illness include the following measures," said a spokesperson.

•Continue to wear masks when around others who do not live with you.

Navigation season resumes on Mississippi River

During the 2020 season, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, staff supported 2,620 commercial navigation lockages at Lock and Dam 10, near Guttenberg. This was above the ten-year average of 2,164 lockages. The 2020 lockages supported 16,974,594 tons of commodities by the navigation industry, in comparison to the 2019 season that supported 1,750 commercial lockages and the movement of 11,575,625 tons of commodities.

Rev. Richard G. Gaul, 78, of Guttenberg, formerly of Luxemburg, passed away Friday, March 19, 2021, at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque.

Visitation will be held 2-8 p.m. Friday, March 26, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville where a prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue Saturday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church prior to funeral services.

Shirley Ann Kann, 91, of Guttenberg, died Monday, March 15, 2021, at the Guttenberg Care Center.

Funeral services were Friday, March 19, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries. Visitation was before services at the church.

Interment was at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Guttenberg.

C.R. adds soccer to sports line-up

Clayton Ridge High School will be adding soccer as an official varsity sport this spring. High school soccer has always been a club sport played in the summertime, and not part of the school's extra curricular activities. The new varsity program will be able to participate in state-sanctioned competition and be eligible for state titles just like football or basketball.
