Ingleside Club inspires community involvement

The Ingleside Club Triangle Park renovation project is well underway. The civic-minded women's group was granted approval in August by the Guttenberg Park Board for the renovation project, located at the intersection of North River Park Drive and North First Street.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation is a national organization founded in 2003 by “Blue Star” mom Catherine Roberts. The idea of comforting veterans with quilts came to her while her son was deployed in Iraq as a gunner sitting atop a Humvee. Her sense of panic 24-hours a day – every day — prompted her into action.

City council enacts face mask mandate

In an effort to mitigate the local spread of COVID-19, the Guttenberg city council on Nov. 9 unanimously passed a resolution mandating the use of face coverings in public places within the city limits.

Margaret M. Vonderhaar

Margaret M. Vonderhaar, 83 of Holy Cross, passed away Thursday, Nov. 12, 2020, at her home.

Services will be held at a later date.

Margaret was born Dec. 15, 1936, in Dubuqe, raised by Paulie Kramer and Mae Reittinger. She married Leonard Vonderhaar on June 21, 1955, in Dyersville. Together they farmed and raised their family north of Holy Cross.

Florentina “Tina” A. Bries, 92, of Luxemburg, passed away Sunday, Nov. 8, 2020, at River Living Center, Guttenberg.

A private family Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Nov. 13, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Luxemburg, conducted by Rev. Noah Diehm.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Anna Marie Leliefeld Olinger of Guttenberg passed away peacefully at the age of 100 at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital on Nov. 1, 2020. 

Private funeral services were at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Guttenberg.

Interment was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Guttenberg.

Calvin G. Bockenstedt, 93, of Luxemburg, passed away on Friday, Nov. 6, 2020, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.

Private funeral services will be Thursday, Nov. 12, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Luxemburg, conducted by Father Noah Diehm.

Burial will be in the Holy Trinity cemetery.

Paul “Zig” Zhiss

Paul “Zig” Zhiss peacefully passed away Nov. 5, 2020, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital. With the Holy Spirit, Paul became a child of God through his baptism, Dec. 18, 2004, joining his Christian family at Trinity Lutheran Church, Guttenberg.

Due to COVID-19 concerns there will be private family services.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Avalo A. “Al” Berns

Avalo A. “Al” Berns, 82, of Prairie du Chien, Wis., passed away Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020, at his home following a brief illness.

Funeral services were Thursday, Nov. 5, at St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish in Prairie du Chien, conducted by Msgr. Charles Stoetzel. Visitation was before services at the church.

Interment was in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Garnavillo with military honors.

Donna J. Smith

Donna Jean (White) Smith, 87, of Dubuque, died peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020, at Ennoble Nursing and Rehabilitation in Dubuque. As was true of so much she did, her passing was graceful, gentle, and beautiful.

A memorial service, coordinated through the Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, will be scheduled for summer 2021, in what the family hopes will be a post-pandemic celebration of Donna’s miraculous life.
