Thomas Hines

On Monday, Nov. 2, 2020, Thomas Hines, devoted husband and father of two children, suddenly passed away at the age of 61.

Due to COVID-19 concerns the family will have private family services.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Fannie M. Trayer

Fannie Mae Trayer, 89, of Garnavillo, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020, at Guttenberg Care Center.

There will be no services at this time.Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo. 

Fannie was born on April 8, 1931, in Peoria, Ill., the daughter of Harry and Evelyn Gull.

Scherbring brothers share decorated military careers

Lieutenant Colonel Mark Scherbring and his brother, Master Sergeant Nicholas Scherbring, grew up on the family's dairy farm near Guttenberg. Their parents, Donald and Madonna Scherbring, raised seven children — four boys and three girls. They attended St. Mary's and Guttenberg High School. Nick enlisted in the Navy following high school, and Mark received a commission into the Army two years later.

Record voter turn-out for Nov. 3 election

A record number of Iowans took part in the 2020 general election on Tuesday, Nov. 3, with approximately 77% of eligible voters casting ballots. Clayton County exceeded the state participation numbers with nearly 82% of the county's registered voters casting ballots— 9,636 voters out of 11,661 registered. County voting was almost evenly divided between absentee voters (4,750) and Election Day voters (4,886).

Plagman Barn receives charitable gift

Northeast Iowa Farm Antique Association is dedicated to the historical preservation of early farm and home practices, techniques, and the education of area youth through demonstration efforts. The volunteer group recently received a charitable gift to help offset the cost of maintaining Plagman Barn and its surrounding outbuildings.

Kay M. Troester

Kay Melinda Troester, 71, of Elkader, died Monday, October 26, 2020, surrounded by her family due to complications from cancer.

Graveside service were Thursday, Oct. 29, at East Side Cemetery, Elkader.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elkader assisted the family with arrangements.

James “Jim” Frommelt

James “Jim” Frommelt of Guttenberg passed away suddenly on Oct. 24, 2020. 

Services will be held at a later date.

Jim was born Jan. 29, 1952, in McGregor, the son of Claude and Claire Frommelt. He was a graduate of Guttenberg Community High School and Marshalltown Community College with an associate degree in refrigeration. He was employed in factories over the years as a machine and CNC operator, and retired approximately six years ago.

John “Jack” H. Domeyer

John “Jack” H. Domeyer, 85, of Holy Cross died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2020, surrounded by his family, at Dubuque Specialty Care in Dubuque.

Visitation was Thursday, Oct. 29, at Kramer Funeral Home in Holy Cross and before services at the funeral home.

Funeral services were Friday, Oct. 30, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Holy Cross, conducted by Rev. Noah Diehm. Burial was in the church cemetery.
