Kathleen Neylan

On Thursday July 16, 2020, Kathleen Neylan, loving sister and aunt, passed away at the age of 75.

Kathleen was born on Sept. 1, 1944, in Washington, D.C. She spent her formative years in Garnavillo and Elkader. In 1961, she graduated high school from St. Clare’s School in Wisconsin. Kathleen attended the University of Iowa, with a major in literature. She received her undergraduate degree in 1964 and then went on to graduate from the University of Iowa law school in 1967. An early trailblazer, she was one of only three women in her graduating class. In 1967, she passed the Iowa Bar Exam.

Marcus E. Schlueter

Marcus Eugene Schlueter, 92, of Ryan, passed away on Monday, Sept. 7, 2020, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. 

Visitation was Friday, Sept. 11, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester and also before services at the funeral home.

Funeral services were Saturday, Sept. 12, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ryan, conducted by Reverend Gabriel Anderson.

Many people across the United States admire the work ethic of Midwesterners. Growing up as a member of a large farm family in rural Iowa required hands-on hard work. Everyone needed to pitch in to keep food on the table, clothes on backs and a safe roof overhead. People took pride in their homes and properties. Vegetable and flower gardens were weed-free and pristine. Farmhouses and surrounding barns were well maintained and sturdy. If there was a job to be done — it was completed in a timely fashion.

The monarch butterfly, biologically known as Danaus Plexippus, is a milkweed butterfly. The butterfly's beauty has earned it status as "King of Butterflies," acquiring the name “monarch." 

In recent years this delicate beauty has been in danger of becoming extinct. Human-caused climate change and habitat loss are now threatening the North American monarch with extinction.

Auditor promotes National Voter Registration Month

Clayton County Auditor Jennifer Garms joins Secretary of State Paul Pate in encouraging Iowans to register to vote or update their registration in conjunction with National Voter Registration Month, which runs through Sept. 30. Additionally, Tuesday, Sept. 22, is National Voter Registration Day.

“If you have recently moved, had a name change, or have never been registered in Iowa before, please consider doing so in preparation for participating in the Nov. 3 General Election,” Auditor Garms said.

The Army's official parachute demonstration team, Golden Knights, presented the Golden Baton award to Sgt. Kari Hoyheim of Guttenberg following their demonstration jump at the Stephen D. Shannon Athletic Complex on Sunday, Aug. 23.  

The Golden Baton award is a solid mahogany baton that is passed in mid-air between members of the team during their free-fall, and is awarded to deserving Army veterans at the conclusion of each show.

Gathering Christians need one another, but more importantly they need ordained ministers to lead the congregation from God’s Word. St. John's Lutheran Church, located at 203 Pearl Sreet, and St. Paul Lutheran Church at 214 South First Street,  in Guttenberg recently welcomed Pastor Michael Ashman to their respective faith communities.

Guttenberg German Band concert set for Sept. 26

This year would have marked the 30th anniversary of Guttenberg's GermanFest celebration. Due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic, the Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce in July announced that this year's event is cancelled.

Jesse P. Danalewich

Jesse Patrick Danalewich, 70, of rural Elberon, died Friday, Aug. 21, 2020, after a long battle with cancer. 

He was born March 17, 1950, in Berwyn, Ill., the son of John and Mary Danalewich. He married Margie Froehle on Sept. 24, 1988, in Guttenberg. 

Jesse served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After his service, he worked 47 years in floor covering installation, most recently at Appleby and Horn Tile Company in Cedar Rapids.

John W. “Jack” Goebel

John William “Jack” Goebel, 81, of Colesburg passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully at home with family by his side, Thursday, Aug. 27, 2020.

Private burial will be at a later date.

Jack was born Oct. 11, 1938, in Luxemburg, the son of Eugene and Helen (Klaus) Goebel. He was raised on his family homestead and was taught the value of hard work at a young age. Jack served in the United States Army National Guard.
