Yaddof hired as Community Vitality Director

Small communities across Iowa have been struggling to support themselves as rural populations continue to decline. It takes vision and a strong steering committee to build civic infrastructure, inspire local entrepreneurs, and grow and support existing local businesses. The City of Guttenberg has gathered a group of visionaries to address these issues.

Engineer hears council input on Schiller Street

The Guttenberg city council at a special meeting on Aug. 25 gave design guidance to an engineer from the firm overseeing the Schiller Street Corridor project. Steve Thompson of Veenstra and Kimm, Inc. was present to speak to the council about the scope of the project, a follow-up to a recorded presentation he made at the regular monthly meeting on Aug. 10. He noted that the local Great Places Committee and Umbrella Arts group have also reviewed the project and given input.

Carolyn H. Oberbroeckling

Carolyn H. Oberbroeckling, 75, of Guttenberg, completed her earthly journey on Aug. 19, 2020, at home, surrounded by her loving family.

To honor Carolyn’s life, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Aug. 29, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Father Marvin Bries.

Family and friends of Carolyn may visit from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church.

Harlan Lester Harvey Backhaus, 90, passed away on Aug. 18, 2020, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester.

Due to COVID-19 concerns there will be a private family service and interment. 

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo.

Andrew W. “Andy” Jaeger

Andrew W. “Andy” Jaeger, 67, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully at 7:50 a.m., on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2020, at Ennoble Manor, surrounded by his loving family.

Visitation was Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Behr Funeral Home, Dubuque. Funeral services followed the visitation at the funeral home conducted by Pastor Christian Kincaid.

Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery at a later date following cremation.

DuWayne Joseph Patzner, 89, of rural Hazel Green, Wis., formerly of Dubuque, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2020, at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.

Funeral services were Friday, Aug. 21, at St. Mary’s Church in East Dubuque, Ill., conducted by Fr. Peter Snieg. Military honors was accorded at the church by members of the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Visitation was before services at the church.

Arrangements were handled by Miller Funeral Home of East Dubuque, Ill.

Guttenberg library copes with COVID-19

  Iowa’s public library accreditation program has been in place since 1986. The State Library documents the condition of public library service in Iowa by requiring public libraries to submit accreditation reports. The Guttenberg Public Library was recently accredited for 2020-2023.

Domestic violence, or intimate partner violence (IPV), is a common problem in the United States. It is estimated that 10 million individuals (including intimate partner, child and elder abuse) are experiencing some kind of mistreatment each year. A stark uptick in IPV, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has recently received national and global attention. Current estimates from the United Nations Population Fund cited three months of quarantine, as a result of COVID-19 lockdowns, will result in a 20 percent increase in domestic violence with a prediction of 15 million additional cases in upcoming months.

Cornerstone Family Practice develops long-term plan

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 1, Cornerstone Family Practice Clinic in Guttenberg will see both well patients and ill patients, with a separate designated clinic space for patients not feeling well.

The current process of drive-thru screening was a temporary response to COVID-19. With the safety of all patients and the community a top priority, a long-term plan has been developed to screen patients with symptoms of influenza, strep, RSV, COVID-19, etc. in the Guttenberg clinic. The Guttenberg clinic space will look different, with added barriers and additional protection of staff, to ensure the safety of both well and ill patients.
