A nice, warm 69th Ice Fisheree

Shawn Stone (seated) of Prairie du Chien and Job Wetter of Boscobel are all smiles as they relax in the relative comfort and warmth of the 69th Annual Prairie du Chien Ice Fisheree Saturday as mild temperatures in the 40s greeted hundreds of ice anglers of all ages on Gremore Lake and other parts of the Mississippi River. Fishing on Gremore Lake near Fisheree Headquarters, The Crooked Oar Bar and Marina on County K, Shawn and Job, 11, were having decent luck on tip-ups catching good-sized largemouth bass. One largemouth caught by a fishing neighbor on a tip-up in the same area tipped the scale at 3.97 pounds. It was Job’s first ice fishing adventure, and he said he liked watching the tip-ups more than jigging. Ice Fisheree activities were held Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. (Photos by Ted Pennekamp)

Coldest air in decades

Prairie du Chien was pretty quiet Tuesday and Wednesday, with a weather warning in effect for record-breaking, dangerous cold through Thursday, Jan. 31, at noon. But Morgan Stifel was out mid-afternoon Tuesday, braving -2oF degree temperatures and -20oF wind chills, as he walked to his home on Marquette Road. Stifel said he moved here in the 1990s and has never seen the air quite so raw as it’s been this week. According to the National Weather Service at La Crosse, the region hasn’t seen wind chills in the 50-below-zero range since Feb. 2-3, 1996. (Photo by Correne Martin)

Joy and memories for 44 years

Having local youth like the Girl Scouts participate in the telethon is part of the organizers’ strategy to continue the longevity this fundraiser has had in the Prairie du Chien community. Entertainment, stories and hard-earned funds have made an enormous difference in heart and cancer research through several key medical institutions across the region.

Gretchen Faulkner is the epitome of the annual Prairie du Chien telethon. She’s demonstrated her love of dancing and singing during the live broadcast for most of her life. She exemplifies the joy the telethon can bring to audiences locally and far away—the happiness and good memories it’s brought viewers for 44 years now.

The Prairie du Chien High School wrestlers have been a staple on the Eagles Heart and Cancer Telethon for many of its recent years with their popular Pushups for Pennies fundraiser. They perform their promised pushups in front of the memory wall each time and, this year, were part of the $46,697 that was pledge by the time the broadcast went off the air.

Iowa man arrested for methamphetamine possession

On Jan. 21, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit observed a 1984 Chevrolet C30 truck swerving over the shoulder of the road several times, and had an equipment violation. The deputy initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle on the Highway 18 bypass and Rice Street in the city of Prairie du Chien. The driver was identified as Daniel Trappe, 55, Colesburg, Iowa.  In speaking with Trappe, the deputy observed him to be exhibiting signs of nervousness and signs of drug use.

K-9 Breck was utilized for an open free air sniff of the vehicle, alerting to the presence of one or more controlled substances in the vehicle. In the vehicle, deputies located a false compartment cylinder, which had crystal like substance inside. The crystal substance field tested positive for methamphetamine.
