Prairie Maison receives safety equipment grant

Prairie Maison Nursing Home, in Prairie du Chien, was recently announced the winner of a Safe Resident Assistance Endowment Grant from West Bend Mutual Insurance Company. This is in partnership with LeadingAge Wisconsin, established with the intent to provide state-of-the-art equipment to improve transferring or transfer assistance for residents and caregivers of long-term care facilities across Wisconsin, while easing the financial burden for facilities. Since the Endowment’s creation in 2014, West Bend has awarded more than $125,000 in grants to over 30 Wisconsin facilities.

Budweiser, Frito-Lay trucks damaged, products stolen

On Tuesday, June 19, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department received a report of theft and criminal damage to property in the township of Bridgeport. Sometime between 3:45 p.m. on Monday, June 18 and 3:52 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19, entry was forcefully gained into a Budweiser cargo trailer and a Frito-Lay cargo truck. The trailer and truck were parked on property located behind the Bridgeport Inn Hotel. A padlock was cut on the Budweiser cargo trailer and cases of beer were stolen from within and a window was smashed out of the Frito-Lay cargo truck.

Crossing Rivers to close Assisted Living, Family Resource Center

Crossing Rivers Health Assisted Living, on Beaumont Road in Prairie du Chien, will soon close its doors, as assisted living, home care and personal home services and the Family Resource Center have been discontinued by the organization.

The Crossing Rivers Health Family Resource Center on Taylor Street is closing as part of the recent administrative and board of directors decision. The center’s few employees are among 36 impacted throughout Crossing Rivers as a result, though 16 will keep positions elsewhere within the organization. (Photos by Correne Martin)

Crossing Rivers Health’s administration and Board of Directors have announced the decision to discontinue the organization’s assisted living services, closing what is formerly known as Walter Schmidt Assisted Living in Prairie du Chien. With this, home health and personal home services, in addition to the Family Resource Center, will be discontinued as well.

“This is your downtown! What is your vision?” was the theme Thursday night at a meeting in the Prairie du Chien City Hall that drew 25 people to discuss ways to improve the downtown and the local economy.

Michigan Street: Tieing in sewer, water laterals

Phase 1 of Marquette open

Stage two of construction on Marquette Road started this week, after the first phase of road—now featuring two lanes of traffic and one center turning lane—opened to travelers Tuesday. Pictured is stage 1 before the highway markings were placed late last week. Also, topsoil was graded and seeding and erosion matting was placed next to the new sidewalk along the highway. For stage 2, crushing of the former roadway is currently underway. City officials recommend local traffic take 11th Street when trying to maneuver around the closed portion of highway, accessing businesses. This is because there are mostly controlled intersections on 11th Street. The city police department also continues to work to restrict semi truck traffic in the residential areas, though some are allowed to pass through in order to make deliveries to the businesses in the vicinity.

Audited finances show healthy general fund balance for city of Prairie du Chien

Prairie du Chien’s government leaders were informed about the city’s 2017 audited financial statements, thanks to highlights presented by Brent Nelson, of Johnson Block and Company, at Tuesday night’s council meeting. Overall, the general fund balance is healthy, he said. 

Nelson made several recommendations to the council based on the status of the general, reserves and TIF funds.

“The general fund decreased by $107,000. Revenue exceeded expenses and was more than budgeted. The biggest component of that was the library campaign fund,” the certified accountant explained.

Chemistry education fortunate to have Mole Day

There are 40,000 chemistry teachers in the United States. If only 10 percent celebrated National Mole Day—on Oct. 23, from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m. yearly—each teacher had 100 students, and each of those students shared in the fun with parents and siblings, that would mean, per year, roughly 1 million people are influenced globally by the most important concept in chemistry: Avogadro’s Number (6.02 x 1023).

Those are some pretty impressive numbers highlighting the impact of National Mole Day, which was founded in Prairie du Chien by the high school’s then-chemistry teacher, Maury Oehler, and officially celebrated by the district for the first time at the school in 1986.

Crawford County to get $2.5 million for bridge projects

Crawford County will be receiving $2,525,931 for six bridge projects in the county. The funding is part of an additional $38.6 million that will fund 70 more local bridge projects statewide for the 2018-2022 Local Bridge Improvement Program cycle. These bridges are in addition to 113 bridges that previously received $76.4 million in this funding cycle. This additional $38.6 million was approved by the joint finance committee and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT), bringing total funding for the local bridge program to $115 million.
