2 arrested for theft, meth possession

On May 13, at 6:40 p.m., the Crawford County Communications Center received a report of a retail theft in progress at Walmart, located in the township of Bridgeport. The reporting party advised there was a substantial amount of merchandise, which was not paid for, being loaded into a black BMW passenger car with Iowa license plates. The black BMW exited the Walmart parking lot and turned northbound on Highway 18.

Bluff View aide shaving his hair for books

A Bluff View Intermediate School paraprofessional has come up with a creative way to raise funds to stock young adult books in the school’s IC (intervention center). 

Eric Fuerstenberg is raffling off the chance for students to shave his hair, in exchange for donations to be used toward expanding the number of books available for check-out to middle schoolers for book reports and Reading Counts points. 

Just $1 buys a ticket, or you can get six tickets for $5. Mostly students and faculty have been buying the raffle chances thus far, but the community is encouraged to get involved, too. Monetary donations toward the books or simply contributions of young adult books are welcome.

Riley selected as 71st Alice in Dairyland

The second time was the charm for Kaitlyn Riley who was chosen as Wisconsin’s 71st Alice in Dairyland.

Riley, who competed in last year's event, will succeed 70th Alice in Dairyland Crystal Siemers-Peterman of Cleveland.

As Alice, Riley will work as a communications professional for the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. Her job will be to educate the public about the importance of agriculture in Wisconsin.

Riley, from Gays Mills, learned first-hand the passion and work ethic of Wisconsin farmers growing up on her family’s registered Jersey dairy farm. Wanting to share agriculture’s story, she studied strategic communications and broadcast journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Top academic titles at River Ridge claimed

Valedicatorian Rachael Herrick and Saltuatorian Brooklyn Parker

River Ridge High School has announced its 2018 senior class valedictorian and salutatorian, Rachael Herrick and Brooklyn Parker, respectively.

Rachael is the daughter of Brenden and Elizabeth Herrick, of Mount Hope. She plans to attend UW-Madison for pre-pharmacy in the fall. 

Throughout high school, she’s been active academically as well as extra-curricularly. In addition to making honor roll, she’s participated in science club, art club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Leo’s Club, National Honor Society, choir, the newspaper and wellness club. She’s also played volleyball, basketball and track and will work at the Prairie du Chien Country Club this summer. In her community, Rachael has assisted with Operation Santa, raked leaves for the elderly via the Leo’s Club and attended the 2016 mission trip to Joplin, Mo.

Mock accident drives home grave lesson

Mom Jenny Folbrecht gave the performance of a lifetime in Wauzeka-Steuben’s mock crash Wednesday afternoon. Her spine-chilling reaction to finding her “deceased son,” Braden Folbrecht, lying on the hood of a vehicle at an accident scene was so realistic, there were no words spoken by any of the stunned, teary-eyed students watching the scene unfold.

The mother of one of the victims, Jenny Folbrecht, is consoled by emergency responder Angie Manning, as the coroner asks for identification of her son.

Somber Wauzeka-Steuben High School students spoke very little during the mock crash, sponsored by the Wauzeka First Responders, Wauzeka Fire Department, Crawford County Sheriff’s Department, Boscobel EMS and of course the school district.

Mary Woodson narrates the scene of the two-car mock crash. She gave an in-depth description of exactly how difficult and emotional such scenes are for everyone involved, including the emergency volunteers.

The screams. The wailing cries. The unforgettable pleas for help. 

A mom’s hugging and rocking of her motionless son who lay bleeding and silent, dead at the scene of a crash—every parent’s worst nightmare.

The first witness on scene, Jenny Folbrecht, and her “deceased” son Braden were only “acting” as part of the “Never Imagined” mock crash scenario targeted at Wauzeka-Steuben High School’s young adults. These youth will soon be attending graduation parties, where they will potentially be tempted to have a few alcoholic drinks and then get behind the wheel.

Dairy Princess, Little Miss Squirt candidates preparing for coronation

The Crawford County June Dairy Month Kick-Off Banquet will be held on Monday, May 28, at the Eastman Salem United Methodist Fellowship Hall. The night will kick off at 7 p.m. with a cheese and cracker social, where attendees can meet the candidates for the Crawford County Dairy Royalty contests. A ham meatball dinner prepared by the Eastman United Methodist Church will follow at 7:30 p.m. 

The program will be filled with lots of delightful dairy tidbits such as the dairy promotion report, introduction of the Crawford County Dairy Breakfast host family, the presentation of the honorary dairy month chairpersons, and the Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin (formerly Wisconsin Milk Market Board) update.

Wauzeka-Steuben graduating class names top academic positions

Valedictorian Drew Zimmerman and Salutatorian Trent McCullick

Drew Zimmerman has been named the valedictorian and Trent McCullick the salutatorian of the Wauzeka-Steuben High School 2018 graduating class.

Drew is the son of Dean and Kim Zimmerman. He has been very active throughout his high school career while excelling academically. Drew has earned distinguished/high honors all four years, achieving an academic letter and four pins for his excellence in the classroom. He has been recognized as student of the month by the Wauzeka-Steuben faculty and staff. Furthermore, he has been involved in a number of extra-curricular activities over the past four years.

City of Prairie du Chien working on details of a pet park

The city of Prairie du Chien recently purchased Wisconsin Department of Transportation land at the Highway 18 Bypass and Lockwood Street intersection, before crossing the tracks to the city's wastewater treatment plant. The intent is to transform the land into a new pet park. 

The city is working with contractors of the current, local construction projects and with the contractor of the upcoming Michigan Street project to obtain fill needed to raise the pet park site.

Vehicle flips, enters flood waters

On Saturday, May 12, at 6:56 a.m., the Crawford County Dispatch Center was notified of a one-vehicle crash off of Highway 60, one mile east of Wauzeka.

Cody Tamling, 23, Wauzeka, was driving a 1997 Jeep Wrangler west on Highway 60 when he fell asleep. His vehicle went off the right side of the roadway, travelled along the ditch and hit a rock which caused the vehicle to overturn and come to a stop in the flood waters.

Tamling was wearing his seatbelt and was able to exit the vehicle. He escaped any injury.

The Jeep was a total loss and was towed from the scene.

Tamling was cited for inattentive driving.
