Hird takes W-S school board position

Mara Hird will be the new Wauzeka-Steuben School District board member, as the district continues discussions of a referendum.

Hird, a People’s State Bank loan officer, won Tuesday’s spring election with 184 votes, defeating Kathleen Schwartz, a De Soto school teacher, who garnered 138 votes. She will step into the shoes of outgoing board president Bill Marfilius, who lost in February’s primary election.

Hird won the majority vote in all of the district’s wards except two—the town of Eastman, which Schwartz won 23-17, and in the town of Haney, where the women tied. Otherwise, Mara’s victory was secured mostly by the Wauzeka village electorate, which gave her 81 votes over Schwartz’s 49.

Incumbent unseated in PdC council Ward 1

New representation will be seated at the Prairie du Chien Common Council first ward chair at future meetings, as a result of Tuesday’s election. Newcomer Nathan Bremmer, a Crawford County Deputy Sheriff, clinched the race with 88 votes, while three-term incumbent, Ron Leys, a retired journalist, received 50 votes, according to city election results.

Bremmer is a 2005 Prairie du Chien High School graduate. He told the Courier Press last month that, despite having little government politics experience, he has always been greatly interested in the various levels of public policy.

Morals, humor, action make ‘Robin Hood’ a must-see play

Prairie du Chien High School student Derick Spiller attempts a lift under the instruction and on the back of mentor Jason Tipsword inside the Little Theater. Next week’s production of “Robin Hood” will be not only humorous, but action-packed.

With more young men involved in the Prairie du Chien High School theater production than anticipated for awhile, “Robin Hood,” and all its merry adventures, was the perfect selection for this year’s spring stage play. Three performances are scheduled for April 12-14, at 7 p.m. each night.

Past assistant and middle school lead director, Dale Hanson is this season’s high school director. He feels play-goers will be enraptured by the show’s humor and the moral of the story of the legendary heroic outlaw who is Robin Hood: Rob from the rich and give to the poor.

It's not a party unless there are horses

The Childrens Ranch in rural Prairie du Chien hosted its annual Easter Party on Saturday. As always, a long line of children formed for the horse rides, which offered each child two sets of rides around the arena. Families also enjoyed painting, petting and getting their pictures taken with horses, like Comet below, as well as the Easter bunny. (Photos by Correne Martin)

Time to take Fort Crawford Museum Challenge

Kathy Koch grew up in Prairie du Chien and her husband, Gary, met her after college while working at Wyalusing Academy. For years, they’ve invested in the betterment of the Prairie du Chien community. They believe the Fort Crawford Museum’s role in preserving the area’s history is so important that they challenge the public to consider donating to the museum, and they plan to match those contributions up to $3,000. Museum season is about to begin and Fort Crawford Museum volunteers are challenging the community to help inject more enthusiastic financial support into the site’s revenue stream.

Overseen by the Prairie du Chien Historical Society (PDCHS), Fort Crawford’s 2018 budget is $85,000. Those dollars sustain facility and grounds maintenance, exhibit creation and conservation, collection cataloguing and preservation, and other general operation costs.

The museum is open seven days a week from May 1 through Oct. 31.
