Board races uncontested for River Ridge

The River Ridge School District Board will have two seats up for re-election for the April 3 election.

Board member Cory Raisbeck is no longer running, though newcomer Aaron Stagman is running for his seat. Incumbent Adam Guthrie is running again in his position.

PdC city council has 1 contested race

There will be one contested common council race on the ballot in the city of Prairie du Chien this spring.

Incumbent Ron Leys and challenger Nathan Bremmer are both seeking election to the District 1 council seat in the April 3 race.

All other races feature incumbents running for re-election without opponents: Mayor Dave Hemmer; council members Mike “Stubby” Jones (District 2), Todd Crotty (District 3), Karen Solomon (District 4), Heather Olson, (District 5) and Todd Myers (District 6); and Municipal Court Judge Dan Key.

Soldiers Grove One Stop sells winning ticket

Six lucky Powerball players won between $50,000 and $150,000 in the Jan. 6 Powerball drawing after purchasing their tickets from Wisconsin retailers, including one in Crawford County.

Each player matched four out of five numbers plus the Powerball, which earns them the $50,000 prize. One of the six players added Power Play to increase their winnings to $150,000, and he or she purchased that winning ticket at RK Campbell’s One Stop in Soldiers Grove.

The winning numbers were 12, 29, 30, 33 and 61. The Powerball was 26 and the Power Play number was 3.

The other winning tickets were sold in Spring Green (River Valley Mobil), Marinette, Wisconsin Rapids, Kiel and Superior.

Winners at all prize levels have 180 days from the drawing to claim their prizes. Winners of more than $599 must claim their prize at the Lottery’s Madison or Milwaukee office or by mail.

Truck goes over embankment, man injured

On Thursday, Jan. 11, at 11:06 a.m., the Crawford County Dispatch Center was notified of a one-vehicle crash on County Highway D, two miles west of Eastman.

Roger Granzow, 88, rural Eastman, was driving a 1997 Ford F150 east on County D. The vehicle slid on the icy road and went over the right embankment, which caused the vehicle to overturn once and come to a stop on its wheels in the ditch.

Granzow was injured and transported to Crossing Rivers Health for treatment of a cut on the head and possible rib fracture.

The vehicle sustained heavy damage and was towed from the scene.

Assisting at the scene were the Eastman First Responders, Eastman Fire Department, Tri-State Ambulance, Eastman Village and Township, Crawford County Highway Department and Bob’s Towing.

Citizens Academy seeking 2018 participants

The Prairie du Chien Police Department and city of Prairie du Chien are searching for the next group of area community members interested in the 2018 Citizens Academy. Anyone interested in learning more about the Prairie du Chien Police Department is encouraged to obtain an application at the Crawford County Communications Center, city hall or online at cityofpdc.com.

The 2018 academy will begin March 7 and conclude on May 9. The class meets on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. Class size is limited.

“As a Prairie du Chien native my entire life and current mayor, I would recommend this class to all who would like to develop a bridge-building trust with the department,” Dave Hemmer said. “Further, it gives you a closer look at what your police officers may face on a daily basis.”

Applications are due by Friday, Feb. 23 and can be dropped off at city hall or the police department.

Trains unexpectedly stopping cause traffic slowdowns in PdC

In recent years, Prairie du Chien drivers have noticed multiple trains slowing down and stopping in the city, causing the blockage of multiple main crossings, including the ones located on Blackhawk Avenue, Wisconsin Street, Iowa Street and Wells Street. These unexpected stops have led to the slowing down of traffic for up to a half an hour at times. In addition, the crossing arms have been lowered when there is no obvious coming train, which can lead to drivers attempting to break the law and drive around the crossing arms unsafely.

These disruptions in traffic, according to Amy McBeth, the director of public affairs for Wisconsin at Burlington Northern Santa Fe, are often the result of equipment malfunctions or railway breakages. These events are especially common when temperatures decrease greatly. It is the only option to stop, so the team aboard the train can continue to travel safely.

Lessons in Learning - Mezera

Prairie du Chien native Kayla Mezera has been the special education teacher in the Prairie du Chien School District since 1980, a career she dreamed about as a young child playing teacher.

Mezera attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire to receive a degree in special education. She completed a master’s degree from Saint Mary’s University in Winona, Minn. Her qualifications also include training in food therapy. 

She found herself interested in the field after witnessing the strength of her sister and a childhood neighbor, who both faced handicaps.

“I was destined to come back here,” Mezera stated. She enjoyed growing up in the community, and her husband, who she met in college, was to take over his family’s local business Mezera Heating and Air Conditioning.
