Council gives Regals three-week extension

The Prairie du Chien Common Council conducted a short, special meeting Tuesday night, Aug. 29, to take care of a couple of items of important business.

Representatives for the Dennis Regal family requested a two-to three-week extension to the legally-determined eviction date of Aug. 31, at which time the family was supposed to have its personal belongings and buildings removed from the city-owned marina premises. Due to an accident in late July, resulting in Dennis Regal Jr. having his left leg amputated, they appealed to the council for a bit more time to fulfill the duties. According to City Administrator Art Osten, the council decided to grant a three-week extension from Aug. 31, thus giving them until Sept. 21 for complete removal.

PdC chamber highlights its functions as Chamber of Commerce Month begins

The Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce welcomed and hosted Stephanie Klett and her Travel Wisconsin tourism team while they spent several days in Prairie du Chien in early June. The purpose of the visit was for the 20-plus person team to visit, learn and understand the destinations in the area that they commonly promote via Travel Wisconsin. What does the Chamber of Commerce do for the community?

According to a proclamation declaring September Chamber of Commerce Month, signed by Gov. Scott Walker, this organization provides a variety of services to its business members, including advocacy and economic development. The proclamation says chambers also:

•promote tourism, community events and prosperity,

•advertise in print, radio and TV across the tri-states, from Green Bay and Milwaukee, to the Quad Cities and Chicago, to La Crosse and farther up the Mississipppi,

•work to solve critical economic challenges, including the labor shortage,

•encourage entrepreneurship,

•solve problems with the unique ability to work with stakeholders from both the private and public sectors,

•and, in general, make the community a better place to live, work and play.

Prairie man charged with meth possession

A 40-year-old Prairie du Chien man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of methamphetamine.  Christopher Fernette faces up to 3.5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, during a narcotics investigation, Prairie du Chien police made contact with Fernette and he consented to police entering his residence. The officers observed several syringe needle caps in his bedroom, the complaint said. The officers also saw other items consistent with drug paraphernalia. During a search of Fernette’s bedroom, the officers seized a clear plastic container with meth inside.

Man gets 4th OWI charge

A 53-year-old Gays Mills man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (fourth offense). Larry Paul Blaha faces up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, a Wisconsin state trooper stopped the Blaha vehicle because he was not wearing a seat belt and the vehicle had a cracked windshield. During the traffic stop, Blaha was arrested for OWI.

Local woman accused of cocaine possession

An 18-year-old Prairie du Chien woman has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of cocaine, one count of possession of marijuana and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Goldie L. Farmer faces up to $6,500 in fines and one year and seven months in jail, if convicted of all three counts. According to the criminal complaint, during a traffic stop, Prairie du Chien police discovered a baggie of marijuana and a baggie of cocaine in the vehicle Farmer was driving.

Woman charged with stealing car

A 31-year-old Onalaska woman has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.

Heather Wangen faces up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, Prairie du Chien police received a call about a vehicle being stolen from the McDonald’s parking lot. A woman was sitting in McDonald’s when she saw Wangen get into her vehicle, start it up and drive away. The vehicle had been unlocked and the keys were in the cup holder.

A short time later, the vehicle was stopped by police on South Marquette Road. Wangen admitted to police that she had used methamphetamine earlier in the day and didn’t feel good. She said she looked around for a car with keys in it so she could drive herself to the hospital.

McGregor, Wauzeka celebrating Labor Day with plenty of activities

McGregor will host its annual Labor Day parade Saturday, Sept. 2.

The McGregor-Marquette Chamber of Commerce board members have selected this year’s theme: McGregor Strong.

Saturday’s parade will begin at 11 a.m., traveling down Main Street toward the river. Line up will begin at 10 a.m., at the middle school. Individuals, organizations and businesses are still welcome to participate. Contact the chamber for more information.

While you’re waiting for the parade to begin, stop by Triangle Park. The McGregor Ecumenical Church Council will be selling coffee and sweet rolls from 9 a.m. to noon. All proceeds will go toward tornado relief efforts.
After the parade, stick around downtown McGregor for a jazz music performance in Triangle Park.

Economic development corporations begin merger

The Crawford County Economic Development Corporation (CCEDC) and the Prairie du Chien Economic Development Corporation (PdCEDC) boards of directors have voted to begin merging into a single organization serving the entire county and surrounding area. The vote authorizes the creation of a joint committee that will develop recommendations, which will be formally voted upon by the boards later this year. The announcement was made jointly by Pete Flesch, president of the CCEDC; and Dan Kanis, president of the PdCEDC.

The focus of the proposed organization will not only be to attract new manufacturers, but also to retain and expand existing businesses.

“A lot of people think economic development is bringing new manufacturers to the area,” Flesch said. “That’s part of it. The most important part of what we do is business retention and expansion. Most jobs are added through existing businesses. Our job is to be facilitators, to be problem solvers.”

Experience the annual Carriage Classic at Villa Louis

On Sept. 8-10, the annual Villa Louis Carriage Classic will be held at the Villa Louis mansion, in Prairie du Chien, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. This stylish event, in its 37th year, will once again highlight competitive carriage driving in arena and obstacle classes and is considered one of the Midwest’s most elegant and lavishly-appointed equine sport driving competitions.

“We are excited to welcome competitors from across the United States for this year’s event,” said Susan Caya-Slusser, site director of the Southwest Historic Sites. “This classic event provides a glimpse into what it was like at Villa Louis during the pinnacle of the Dousman era stock farm.”

Area resident testifies for importance of family farms in the country’s capital

On July 25, Brenda Kluesner, loan officer and crop insurance banker at Royal Bank in Cassville, was given an opportunity she never expected someone from southwest Wisconsin would receive. Brenda testified at the “Commodities, Crop Insurance and Credit Hearing.” Before the Senate agriculture committee, her purpose was to represent the thoughts and lives of those living in rural communities who require stable politics, so that they can live the best possible lives on their family farms.

“I have a passion for agriculture,” Brenda stated while looking back on what started her love for farming. She has an extensive amount of knowledge about FFA and crop insurance, along with a long history in farming, including owning and operating her own family farm.
