A Wisconsin state toxicology lab report indicated the presence of THC and cocaine in Brandon Ballweg’s system the evening he crashed his vehicle in Madison, resulting in the deaths of Kirk U’Ren and Jenni Steiner, according to a criminal complaint filed in Dane County Circuit Court. Wisconsin State Patrol speed estimates also determined Ballweg’s speed range at the time of the crash was between 87 and 92 mph.

Southwest Tech and Workforce Connections have both held offices in Prairie du Chien for a number of years. On April 11, they made their presence more prominent in the community by holding a ribbon cutting and open house at a new facility at 1304 S. Marquette Rd. Together, the two will continue to connect people, training and employment, while advancing self-sufficiency for area citizens.

The reason for the more visible location is because both entities had outgrown their former spaces near one another in the Crawford County Administration Building.

“About a year ago, we made the decision to leave. Because of the awesome partnership we have, we asked the technical college to go with us,” stated Teresa Pierce, Workforce Connections executive director. “We provide services in nine counties. The college provides the training part of it and we provide the employment part.”

Regal Marina family shares its side of the story

The Regal family—Jesse, Josh, Sue and Dennis Jr.—feel they have been personally wronged by the city of Prairie du Chien over how they’ve run the marina for over 33 years. Arbitration is presently underway between both parties. (Photos by Correne Martin)

The Regal family is pictured with some of their friends, aka their extended marina customer family. (Front row, from left) Jesse Regal, Josh Regal, Ed Erdos III; (back row) Chuck Shover, Doc and Juanitta Kilby, Everett Rowland, Patricia and Cletus Cooley, Sue and Dennis Regal Jr.

It’s business as usual this boating season at Regal Marina. At least, it’s mostly as usual, considering electricity to the docks was disconnected by the city of Prairie du Chien, upon state recommendation, one year ago in May and has not been restored. (Boaters can use on board generators and the buildings still have power for service needs.)

It’s well-known in Prairie du Chien area communities that the Regal family and the city government have been at odds for years. Only in the last few years have their disagreements become news. In January, the contention turned into a legal battle.

The generations of Regals who have stake in the marina business have remained quiet about their side of the story—until now. The family requested an opportunity to tell their story and, alongside a half-dozen loyal boaters, April 5, they sat down to do so.

Here a ‘neigh,’ there a ‘neigh’ for Easter

Avery Kilburg was one of many young girls and boys who enjoyed pony rides at the Children’s Ranch’s annual Easter Party Saturday. In addition to the glory of sitting atop the majestic animals, the youngsters petted, brushed and fed some of the horses, colored Easter eggs and crafts and visited with the Easter bunny. 2016 walleye 'young of year' numbers low, but big 2015 will help maintain population

By Ted Pennekamp

Traditionally, as the weather warms up, more and more anglers take to their area waters to test their skills and try their luck. Each year is a bit different, but Mississippi River anglers in Pools 9 and 10 should expect a healthy fishery in 2017 despite relatively low numbers of certain species netted by DNR electrofishing crews this past fall.
