Restoration hoped for French-Canadian cabin on St. Feriole Island

Efforts to completely restore the Gauthier/Coorough House on St. Feriole Island, at the intersection of Bolvin and 5th Streets, started last month. The city of Prairie du Chien transferred ownership to the Prairie du Chien Historical Society, which is currently working to get the log cabin listed on the National Register of Historic Places.The project and an endowment for its future are anticipated to cost $100,000. In 1840, Madeline Gauthier sold her Prairie du Chien log cabin home to her daughter, in return for “love, affection and one dollar.” With it, she included an inventory of all the furnishings that adorned the inside of the house. That document made its way to the Register of Deeds and, now, the Prairie du Chien Historical Society is hoping to use it in a major restoration of the structure, located on St. Feriole Island.

This renovation would allow a home for interpretation of the community’s French-Canadian heritage, which is not currently derivable from any entity in Wisconsin, according to Mary Antoine, historical society president. Estimates for the overhaul as well as an endowment to maintain the property are in the $100,000 range, she said.

The Port burglarized, authorities seek suspect

These images of the alleged burglar and the missing lock box were released by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department Tuesday. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers, 326-8933.

Early Tuesday, March 7, at 4:33 a.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a burglary at The Port convenience store in Bridgeport.

According to authorities, at around 1 a.m., an adult white male forcefully gained entry into the convenience store. The suspect attempted to access a safe, cash register and ATM machine. Eventually, he got into the ATM machine and removed the ATM cassette, which is essentially the lock box that holds cash. The suspect took an undisclosed amount of cash from the machine as well as miscellaneous items from the store.

The man is described by the sheriff’s department as about 6-foot in height, medium build, with a large nose. He was wearing a black shirt or jacket, a black face mask, goggles and light-colored gloves.

The Crawford County Crime Stoppers urges anyone having information about this or any other crimes to call 326-8933 or (866) 779-PAYS.

Horseshoe’s raffle results in donation to Crawford County Ridge Runner UTV/ATV Club

The Horseshoe Tavern, of rural Prairie du Chien, donated $2,606 in proceeds from its Feb. 25 rabbit hunt gun raffles to the Crawford County Ridge Runner UTV/ATV Club, which will use the funds toward purchasing signs for the trails. There were 32 teams that participated in the rabbit hunt, including 128 people of all ages. Others who didn’t hunt also came out for a good time and to take a chance on the gun raffles. Pictured (from left) are Grant and Greg Russell and Vicki and Royce Walters. The Russells represented the Horsehoe and all are founders of the club, which meets the first Wednesday of every month at various sponsoring-taverns around Crawford County. Recently, Freeman Township and the village of Wauzeka passed ordinances allowing their roadways to serve as UTV/ATV trails. Organic Valley takes over W-S Elementary one morning

The 4K students pounded on the floor in appreciation for the Organic Valley staff members who shared the names of their favorite books and explained why they like them.

Dressed in flannel, cowboy hats and handmade Holstein cow caps, Wauzeka-Steuben elementary students sang the “Life of a Farmer” as a special thank you to Organic Valley farmers’ cooperative for coming to the school and stimulating excitement about cooperation, farm-to-table initiatives and reading. The students created displays on bulletin boards outside each elementary classroom. This one depicts a fictitious cooperative.

Meshing Dr. Seuss with farm knowledge was the highlight of this class’ display.

These happy and adorable little cows listened attentively during the assembly.

Organic Valley is run by farmers who grow the food, milk the cows and bring you cheese. Farmer Justin Trussoni spoke with the third grade at Wauzeka-Steuben about the growing process and comparing organic to non-organic.

Kimberly Frederickson, Organic Valley director of learning and organizationl development, summarized farm-to-table for the students. She also noted that the cooperative doantes over $2 million each year to schools and non-profit organizations.

Fifth grader Alex Manning shared his essay about cooperation during the assembly.

Fourth grader Brett Wagner also talked about cooperation.

It was Dr. Seuss’ birthday, and certainly an extra special one at Wauzeka-Steuben Elementary School Thursday, March 2. Organic Valley, the thriving farmers’ cooperative out of La Farge, had about a dozen employees and farmers in the school for Read Across America Week, to stimulate some fun conversations about farm-to-table and to grow tomorrow’s readers and writers.

The two-hour addendum to regularly-scheduled curriculum was a real treat for the students, who studied Organic Valley all week, as well as the teachers. The morning started with a “moo-ving” assembly in which the youths, many dressed like cowboys and even cows, learned about Organic Valley. Then, staff from the school and the organization shared the names of their favorite books and many mentioned Dr. Seuss’ classics. Dr. Seuss himself was also in attendance.

Local support secures fresh water, brings life to Haitian village

The Lolo, Haiti, village received clean, fresh water for the first time in February, thanks to support from volunteers living in the Bridgeport area. For the very first time, a small village in the impoverished nation of Haiti has clean and fresh water. It’s all thanks to donations and volunteer support provided by the Cornerstone Foursquare Church in Bridgeport, the Coastal Community Church in South Carolina and the Iowa-based non-profit Water For Life. The Lolo Community Well Project will be completed this month, as the finishing touches of a well house are underway.

A few years ago, the Cornerstone Church became connected to a couple of volunteers from South Carolina, who were originally from Madison—Nick and Kate Matthias. Their Madison pastor had done mission work in Haiti and helped link them to Lolo, Haiti, after they moved to the East Coast. During a medical mission to Lolo, Nick, an engineer specializing in renewable energies, and Kate, a pediatrician, recognized a real need for a fresh source.

Shake up at Prairie du Chien City Hall continues with familiar faces

The shake-up at Prairie du Chien City Hall continues, as a new zoning administrator was appointed during Tuesday night’s common council meeting and the creation of an administrative assistant position was approved.

Cassie Rickleff was named the new zoning administrator, filling the vacancy left by Julie Jackson, who departed the first week of January for a new position with Crawford County. City Planner Garth Frable was the interim zoning administrator. Rickleff will take the job as soon as the new administrative assistant is hired. Rickleff will receive a new salary of $20 per hour upon completion of a six-month probationary period, plus an additional $1.50 per hour for her added duties of municipal court clerk. Furthermore, Deputy City Clerk Joni Clausen will receive an increase in her salary from $17.57 to $18 per hour.

De Soto man wins Powerball

David Fredrickson, of De Soto, is one of two lucky players who matched four numbers plus the Powerball in the Feb. 18 Powerball drawing to win $50,000. Fredrickson purchased his ticket at Pronto Market, 10110 Highway 35, De Soto.

Robert Lienke, of Eagle River in Vilas County, was the other lucky player.  The winning numbers from the drawing were 3, 7, 9, 31 and 33 with a Powerball of 20. The Power Play number was 3.
