Safe found along highway in Wyalusing

A small safe was found in Wyalusing Township on Christmas Eve and Grant County authorities are trying to find the owner.

On Saturday, Dec. 24, at about 2:30 p.m., the Grant County Sheriff’s Office recovered a small black Sentry safe, measuring 2 feet by 2 feet, along Highway 18 in Wyalusing Township. The safe was shut, locked and did not appear to be damaged. At this time, it is unknown who the safe belongs to or how it got there.

PdC man arrested for fifth OMVI

A Prairie du Chien man was arrested for fifth offense operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant, following an incident Monday night, Jan. 2, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.

At 10:30 p.m., the sheriff’s department received a complaint of a possibly-impaired driver who struck a traffic barrier in the parking lot of Kwik Trip in Prairie du Chien. A Crawford County Sheriff’s deputy, who was close when the complaint was received, observed the vehicle operating on Webster Street and South Michigan. When the vehicle pulled into a residence on South Michigan, the deputy made contact with the driver, identifying him as Charles Humbert, 57. Humbert showed signs of impairment and had trouble standing or walking on his own, according to the deputy. After further investigation, Humbert was arrested for OMVI, fifth offense.

The Prairie du Chien Police Department and Crossing Rivers Health assisted in the incident.

‘River Rat’ to tell stories at historical society’s annual meeting

Kenny Salwey grew up on the Whitman Swamp in Buffalo County, 6,000 acres of seasonally-flooded Mississippi River backwaters. He will be in Prairie du Chien, Jan. 12, to share his entertaining childhood stories.

Community members invited to listen to familiar tales

If you’re interested in listening to some good ole river stories about more leisurely times when mother nature was foremost in the lives of those who depended on the river for their livelihood, Kenny Salwey’s keynote speech at the Prairie du Chien Historical Society’s annual meeting is the moment to savor.

The meeting will be Thursday, Jan. 12, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., at Huckleberry’s Banquet Hall, in Prairie du Chien. Social time begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30, a short business meeting and then the speaker.

City enters into arbitration over Regal Marina

Public works department reorganized, polling places to consolidate at Hoffman Hall in 2017

The city of Prairie du Chien and Regal Marine Group have entered into arbitration over possible termination of the lease between the city-owned and Regal-leased marina, according to details that emerged from closed session at Tuesday night’s Prairie du Chien Common Council meeting.

A statement released late Tuesday by the council gave some background on the issue, mainly stating, “On Nov. 2, 2016, the city of Prairie du Chien served Regal Marine Group, Inc., with a notice of termination of marina lease. On Dec. 22, 2016, the city received from counsel for Regal Marine Group, Inc., a demand that the termination issues be resolved by arbitration. The city of Prairie du Chien will participate in said arbitration.”

Christmas assistance numbers down

Bags for one family sat ready to be picked up at the Prairie du Chien United Methodist Church, the site where the Salvation Army coordinates its annual Christmas program. The program benefits mostly children and some adults who can’t afford to buy Christmas gifts.

Winter clothing and toys were piled high on tables in the basement of Hoffman Hall during the Prairie du Chien Jaycees’ annual Crawford County Operation Santa distribution. Each year, children in need receive a warm winter hat and mittens, along with a toy and/or chamber dollars as part of the program. Each family also receives food items and coupons for free groceries to cook a Christmas dinner.

The bell ringers of the Salvation Army have retired to their cozy homes and the enterprise that is Operation Santa has disengaged for yet another year.

For 2016, the Salvation Army Christmas program served 63 families, including 179 children and 84 adults, according to coordinator Jen Kapinus. Each received gifts purchased and wrapped by sponsors. On Dec. 12, the sponsored families picked up their bags and boxes of gifts at the Prairie du Chien United Methodist Church. There were also 13 families that went unsponsored this year, but Kapinus said the 30 children within those families received gifts from Salvation Army’s remaining Red Kettle funds from bell ringing in 2015.

Man charged with showing sexually explicit material

An 18-year-old Wauzeka man was charged in Crawford County Circuit Court on Dec. 21 with 10 counts of exposing a child to harmful material.

If convicted, Tyler J. Gillitzer faces up to 3.5 years imprisonment and a $10,000 fine for each count.

According to the criminal complaint, Gillitzer is charged with showing sexually explicit materials to high school students on his cell phone.

New tower along Hwy. 27

A new telecommunication tower has been erected along Highway 27 south of Eastman, next to the Achenbach farm. Space on the tower is leased by NEIT and is likely to include cellular and Internet service.

Two new guyed telecommunication towers are in the works in Crawford County.

Cousins Steve Achenbach and David Byer recently formed a partnership, Hy-View Towers, LLC. Their first project is a new tower 310 feet tall, erected a few weeks ago near Achenbach’s farm along Highway 27 south of Eastman. According to Achenbach, space on the tower is currently leased to Northeast Iowa Telephone Company (NEIT), of Monona, Iowa.

The second tower, located off of Tavern Road in the village of Soldiers Grove, is not subject to county review. It’s 250 feet tall on Iverson Trust land and is also expected to benefit NEIT.

Achenbach couldn’t confirm details but said, through the lease, NEIT is looking to provide additional cellular service as well as high-speed Internet service to the area. Steve Hanson, NEIT’s director of business development, could not be contacted by press time to validate the carrier of either service.

Bluff View Builds CWD Kiosk

Bluff View technical education students who built a CWD drop-off kiosk are Lexi Petsche, Faith Meyer, Trevor Ziegler, Chandler Farmer and Chazz Farmer.

The CWD drop-off kiosk is in front of NCS Gunsmithing, Sales and Indoor Archery in Prairie du Chien.

Instructions are found on the kiosk.

Caution: Exposure to the Fun Raising Follies in Prairie du Chien may cause sudden outbursts of joy, happiness and uncontrollable laughter.

The Mississippi River Sculpture Park is a non-profit organization whose goal is to preserve area heritage and history of Prairie du Chien, Marquette and McGregor. Every year, in January, the sculpture park committee hosts the Fun Raising Follies, a community variety show featuring all local talent.
