Agencies working to make COTR safe

Preparations have been underway at the Country on the River grounds near the construction on Highway 18 in the town of Bridgeport. The Wisconsin DOT, event organizers and the Crawford County Sheriff’s and Highway departments have been working to ensure a safe event for all motorists and event patrons.

With the Country on the River music event beginning Thursday and running through the weekend, it is anticipated that there will be heavy traffic on Highway 18 in the construction zone of the Highway 18-60 Project that is underway in the town of Bridgeport.

Taste of the Driftless to raise funds for Democratic parties

The Taste of the Driftless farm-to-dinner event, featuring dishes by area French chef Monique Hooker, will be held Saturday, Aug. 20, at Hidden Springs Creamery in Westby.

Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin) will be guest speaker at the dinner, which is a fundraiser for the Democratic parties of Crawford, Monroe, Richland and Vernon Counties.

International award-winning cheesemaker Brenda Jensen will host the event, which will begin at 2 p.m. with music, appetizers, games and an auction. Dinner, served sit-down family style, will follow at 4 p.m. After hearing speakers and candidates, guests will enjoy dessert, tours, music and socializing.

The main course will include marinated grilled beef loin with Chimichurri, grilled vegetables, fresh corn, herb-poached salmon and potato salad.

PdC police urge caution following string of thefts

Over the past few days the Prairie du Chien Police Department has taken multiple reports of thefts from vehicles around Prairie du Chien.

These thefts are taking place during the early morning hours and primarily involve unlocked vehicles. Items taken range from vehicle keys, to spare change to small electronics.

If you see suspicious people hanging around or entering vehicles please report the activity to the police department immediately.

Please lock your car doors, your garage entry doors and home doors. Also remove valuable electronics from your vehicles if possible.

Normally, these thefts begin during the spring and fade during the transition to summer. This is the first round of correlated thefts that have been reported this year.

Rock and Roll Reunion a one-day collaboration of regional musicians

Rock and Roll Reunion a one-day collaboration of regional musicians In 2010, a group of 20-plus retired musicians from southwest Wisconsin got together to perform for one day in memory or fellow musician Dale Kidd of Madison. The first Rock and Roll Reunion was held at the Hickory Grove Golf Course in Fennimore and proceeds went to Outreach For World Hope, a nonprofit group helping to feed starving children.

The event was not only successful but a lot of fun for area musicians, so the group vowed to hold the reunion every two years and donate to additional causes as well. The second reunion was held also at Hickory Grove in 2012 and, in 2014, the event moved to Woodman.

This year, the Rock and Roll Reunion will again be held in Woodman on Saturday, Aug. 6. There is no cover charge for the event.

Young helping hands complete mission to clean up after flood

The Holy Family Parish mission group included (front row, from left) Kaitlyn Waller, Gracie Colson, Lindsey Nicholson, Caitlin Nolan, Jessica Bedtka, Veronica Kramer, Lauren Kennedy; (back row) Father Weighner, Weston Hill, Preston Hendrix, Wesley Schwager, Jack Stoeffler, Alexis Nolan, Faith Dillman, Peggy Koresh and Mary Stoeffler. Though Fr. Weighner did not go on the trip, he has been very instrumental in building the parish’s Jaywalkers group, of which many of these kids are current or past members.

The mission group tore tile out of multiple rooms in one building that is being cleaned and repaired to shelter people displaced by future floods.

In October 2015, heavy rains and massive floods inundated Andrews, S.C.—a city of around 2,800 people. Nine months later, devastation remains for many of the residents, and a group of 15 high schoolers and college students from the Prairie du Chien area got to see the ruins first-hand during a mission trip July 5-14.

Book brings alive ‘The Battle For Prairie du Chien’

The stories of our country’s past can be quite complicated. Telling them in a way that brings history alive takes a careful approach and a proficient knowledge of the events as they occurred.

Local historian Mary Elise Antoine has written three books on Prairie du Chien: the first was “Images of Prairie du Chien” in 2011, then came “Legendary Locals” in 2015, and just released is “The War of 1812 in Wisconsin: The Battle for Prairie du Chien.”

“The War of 1812 in Wisconsin” is a story that Antoine said “really hasn’t been told before now.” It’s one she started a long time ago when she worked at the Villa Louis as part of a research report she wrote on the battle for Prairie du Chien. In 2012, she revisited that report and decided to write on either side of the battle, from about 1780 through about 1816.

Mother, son arrested in drug bust

A mother and son were both arrested last week in connection with illegal narcotics activity at their residence within a Prairie du Chien motel, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.

In early June, Crawford County investigators were notified of the potential drug activity. Further investigation led them to believe that Patrick Tesar, 18, and his mother, Renee Hubanks, 50, were dealing marijuana, methamphetamine, psilocybin mushrooms, and possibly prescription medication out of the motel room in which they resided at the Prairie Motel. Next, investigators applied for and were granted a search warrant for the residence, Sheriff Dale McCullick said.

Great River Relay For Life is Saturday evening at PdCHS

Peoples State Bank and MPC gave $1,500 corporate sponsorships to the Great River Relay For Life last week. Both have been 16-year financial contributors of the local fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Also, Prairie du Chien Mayor Dave Hemmer signed a proclamation declaring July 30, 2016, as Relay For Life Day in the city. He is pictured (center) with Shelly Rider, one of the relay’s coordinators. It’s time again for the Great River Relay For Life, held at the Prairie du Chien High School, from 4 to 11 p.m., Saturday, July 30, in an effort to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. This year’s theme is “One World, One Hope.” Luminaria sales are still available at People’s State Bank and A Cut Above in Prairie du Chien through Wednesday.

On Saturday, set up for teams and registration begins at 3 p.m. The survivor reception and silent auction will begin at 4 p.m. The opening/survivor ceremony is at 5 p.m. Mary Ann Heisz, a survivor and co-coordinator of the Relay For Life, said she would like to see a great number of survivors come out this year to walk on the track for the survivors lap. A dessert auction starts at 6 p.m. Then, the caregiver ceremony takes place at 7 p.m. The silent auction and luminaria sales will end by 8 p.m. Capping off the evening, the Spirit of Hope/Luminaria program is a beautiful, emotional and unforgettable moment ending the relay.

Blues fest to fill St. Feriole Island with attitude this weekend

The Mark May Band, accompanied by The Soul Satyr Horns, will bring a unique brand of blues with attitude to the Prairie Dog Blues Festival’s main stage this Saturday, July 30, at 4:30 p.m.

After 19 years, the Prairie Dog Blues Festival has become quite the outdoor party for music lovers of all ages. It brings thousands of people to Prairie du Chien the last weekend of July every summer—many who have fallen in love with the casual, regionally-acclaimed event and can’t wait to return each year. The musical talent that fires up the St. Feriole Island bash hails from all over the world, specializing in an assortment of blues and roots music like Chicago blues to West Coast jump, hard-driving Mississippi hill country blues, New Orleans horns, Texas boogie, zydeco, gospel, blues rock, etc.

The 2016 lineup has received rave reviews on the Prairie Dog Blues Fest Facebook page from new as well as dedicated festival-goers. Local hotels and campsites are booked, the grounds are getting set-up, performers are touring toward PdC and the weekend is almost here.

Young woman transported to La Crosse hospital following rollover

Nichelle Skrupky-Nelson, 21, of Viroqua, was injured in a rollover crash on Highway 171 Sunday.

A young woman was transported to a La Crosse hospital as a result of a rollover accident Sunday, July 17, in Crawford County.

Just before 7:45 a.m., Nichelle Skrupky-Nelson, 21, of Viroqua, was driving a 2007 Saturn west on Highway 171, one-tenth of a mile west of Highway 27. She crossed into the eastbound lane of traffic, struck a guardrail, crossed back into the other lane, continue off the right side of the roadway, went up an embankment and rolled twice before the vehicle came to a rest on its top. Skrupky-Nelson was ejected from the vehicle and transported to Vernon Memorial Hospital by Ocooch Mountain Rescue for treatment of the injuries sustained in the accident. She was later transported to Gundersen-Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, though the extent of her injuries is not known.

The Seneca Fire Department and First Responders, Crawford County Highway Department and Scott’s Towing of Ferryville assisted at the scene.
