150 Years of Service: McGregor Hook and Ladder Co. No. 1 marks milestone

In a town as rich in history as McGregor, it’s not surprising early fire department artifacts exist today. That includes the original ladder cart and 1927 fire truck, the first McGregor ever purchased. A display at the McGregor Historical Museum (shown here) has an early helmet, jacket and leather bucket. The firefighters also have the original minute book, older badges and helmets and other memorabilia.

Escape room coming to Elkader

Birdie’s brings nostalgia, vintage electronics and pet supplies to Elkader

Amanda Hostetler is the owner of the new business Birdie’s, located on Elkader’s Main Street. The store offers a unique selection of pet supplies and novelty gifts.

Birdie’s opened this past weekend, selling items not just for dogs and cats, but vintage signs and electronics too. Nostalgia will also feature prominently in the store’s ambiance, with mid-century stylings and entertainment.

Daisy Kay Coffee, Crystals and Gifts recently celebrated its opening 211 Main St., in downtown McGregor. Daisy Kay has both polished and rough stones, fossils and more. Some pieces are larger, but smaller tumbles are available as well. “You can find a big statement piece here, but if you just want some pocket crystals, we have those too,” noted Myah Davis, who operates the shop with sister Ashley Schoenfeldt.

The sisters are happy to answer questions about their rocks and instruct customers to select crystals that call to them.

Bulldogs sweep pair of doubleheaders, drop heartbreaker at Kee

Bulldog Austin Schlee was pitcher Nick Krambeer’s battery mate in the first of two games against Postville last week.

The Bulldogs—including senior Chauncy Drahn—scored early and often in a 20-1 effort over Postville on June 14.

Nick Krambeer earned the game one victory over Postville on June 14. His four innings on the mound included two hits, two walks and one unearned run. He struck out eight batters.
