4-H HONOR FOR JEAN WHITTLE

Jean Whittle of Volga was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, August 21. Ninety-two Iowa counties participated this year and selected 119 inductees for their outstanding service and dedication to 4-H. Inductees or their surviving family members were presented a certificate by the Iowa 4H Foundation President Tom Nicholson and State 4-H Program Leader John-Paul Chaisson-Cárdenas as they were introduced on stage.

The new school year brought a few new faces to Central Schools. The district added seven new employees: Mycala Briggs, social worker; Deborah Deitchler, 6-12 Special Education teacher; Eric Gronowski, 6-12 Special Education associate; Shelby Huster, counselor; Jeff Robinson, maintenance; Lauren Schwendinger, 4-5 teacher; and Allison Walch, district secretary.

River crests lower than expected


Top and middle: A volunteer force of more than 500 people filled sandbags last week to protect lower South Main Street from floodwaters. A 27-foot crest was predicted for the Turkey River. The river actually crested at 22.5 feet.

Many people need licenses to sell particular goods and services. However, there’s a fellow in Elkader who sells actual licenses—Creative Licenses. More specifically, he creates and sells artwork made out of vehicle license plates—and he sure does make huge statement doing so!
