School announces plans for Aug. 24 return to classes

Clayton Ridge Community School has announced its plans for the return to classes on Aug. 24. 

"At this time we are planning to begin the school year with all students face-to-face," said Superintendent Shane Wahls in a letter to parents. "We will have a number of mitigation procedures in place."

$619,400 contract awarded for city sewer improvements

The Guttenberg city council awarded a contract for  approximately $619,400 in sanitary sewer improvements when it met in regular session on Monday, July 13.

Municipal Pipe and Tool  of Hudson was  the low bidder with a base bid of $479,335 plus alternate options at $140,015 for a total of $ 619,440.90.  Mat Sauer of Veenstra-Kim, the engineering firm overseeing the project, told the council there were three bidders and all came in under estimates.

Root builds impressive replica of The United States Flag

Esmann and Abel Island are home to a unique river community comprised of full and part-time residents. The peninsula is located just north of Guttenberg in scenic Pool 10 of the Mississippi River. The residents of this peaceful, hidden oasis recently gathered, under the direction of Ken Root, to assist with the construction of a large, impressive replica of the United States Flag.

Chamber schedules some summer events but cancels GermanFest

The Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce board of directors met on July 8 for their monthly meeting to discuss the remaining Chamber events scheduled for this summer and fall. The board decided to proceed with some annual summer events, but cancelled what would have been the 30th annual GermanFest celebration.

Lockmaster House closed for repairs

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is repairing its lockmaster house at Lock and Dam 10 in Guttenberg. The Corps now leases the house to the Guttenberg Heritage Society to operate as the Lockmaster House Heritage Museum. The house is closed to the public and visitors during the rehabilitative work.

Corps officials awarded a contract to Aegean Construction Supply Corporation, from Shalimar, Fla., to complete the rehabilitative work. The contractors started work on the project in May and hope to finish by the end of fall.
