Mississippi navigation season closes

The 2019 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District navigation season has come to an end. The last tow of the season departed St. Paul, Minn., Thursday, Nov. 28.

The departure of the Motor Vessel Kelly Rae Erickson bookmarks a challenging navigation season that started April 24 with the arrival of the Motor Vessel Aaron F. Barrett. Following the Barrett, there would not be another tow to reach St. Paul for more than three weeks due to spring flooding. The second tow to reach St. Paul was the Motor Vessel Thomas E. Erickson. She reached the capital city May 20. The average date for the first tow is around March 18.

The Guttenberg Municipal Hospital and Clinics (GMHC) Family Resource Center is holding a series of "Lunch and Learn" workshops on the first Thursday of each month. 

The informational programs are being held in the education room at GMHC, 200 Main Street.

GMHC Family Resource Center food pantry

Students of St. Mary Immaculate Conception School, Guttenberg, participated in a cereal drive. Eighty students donated 658 pounds of cereal to the Family Resource Center's food pantry. Winter Farmers Market open on Dec. 7 at Guttenberg Marina Visitor Center

The public is invited to come out for the Winter Farmers Market on Saturday,  Dec. 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Marina Visitor Center at 715 S. River Park Drive in Guttenberg. 

"Shop your local Farmers Market for your holiday entertaining and shopping needs," say organizers.

Items to be offered include produce, fabric art, honey, preserves, baked goods and more.

The annual Holiday Tour of Homes, the Clayton Ridge freshman class fundraising event, is set to take place on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 1-5 p.m.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from any Clayton Ridge High School freshman, at the door of each participating home, church or business, or by calling the school at 563-252-2341.

Verdamay Faust and Delos "Pockey" Weseman have been supporters of the senior citizen mealsite for several years. They come for the nutritious, hot meal but the real bonus is the lively conversation and reminiscing they routinely enjoy. I met up with the two spirited seniors, and they shared their stories. As etiquette requires – ladies first.

On Thursday, Oct. 24, the Guttenberg Rotary Club, and Rotary clubs around the world met in observance of World Polio Day. 

The designated day was established by Rotary International to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis.

City holiday lighting contest

The contest is open to all utility customers of the City of Guttenberg; winners will receive prizes in the form of a credit on their electric bills.

Lois Goerdt shares memories of growing up in a large family

Seated in a comfortable rocking chair surrounded by family photos and cherished accessories,  Lois Goerdt of Guttenberg, 84 years young, jokingly explained her real estate situation, "I call this my cottage and the other place my town house." In between moves, Goerdt took time out to share her memories of growing up in a small town. "I was born in 1935. I had 14 brothers and sisters. Bill Leliefeld and I are the only surviving members of the family," she said.
