The origin of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Paul District traces back to 1866. At that time, Congress authorized the Corps of Engineers to establish a four-foot navigation channel on the upper Mississippi River. Major Gouverneur K. Warren, acclaimed for his leadership at the Battle of Gettysburg, was assigned to establish the district and conduct preliminary surveys of the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Warren opened the first district office in August of 1866.

Council views corridor project, okays asphalt street improvements

The Guttenberg city council at its regular monthly meeting on Aug. 12 reviewed the proposed Schiller Street Corridor, approved asphalt street paving projects,  and okayed a wording change in the garbage ordinance that will affect the monthly rate for some customers.

Clayton Ridge school board news

The Clayton Ridge School District board of directors heard  reports from school administrators, awarded bids, and approved routine agreements when they met in regular session on Thursday, Aug. 8, at the high school library in Guttenberg .

President John Heying called the meeting to order with board members Ellen Johnson, Alicia Helle, Christine Aulwes and Mike Finnegan in attendance, along with Superintendent Shane Wahls, Board Secretary Dave Schlueter, Dean of Students Wade Marlow, and School Nurse Renae Kraus.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is on a mission to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. The foundation, which began in 1981, is the largest wish-granting organization in the world. Make-A-Wish serves every community in the United States and its territories through 60 chapters nationwide. The foundation has granted more than 315,000 wishes since its inception, averaging a wish granted every 34 minutes. There are nearly 40,000 volunteers who help grant wishes each year.

Celebrate Guttenberg this weekend

The Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce invites everyone to celebrate Guttenberg and its river heritage this weekend with a variety of summer activities for the whole family. 

The event opens Friday evening at the River of Music in Ingleside Park from 6-8 p.m. featuring music by Pizzin' in the Wind. The winner of the summer sculpture contest will be announced by Umbrella Arts. The Guttenberg library will sponsor youth activities from 5:15-6 p.m. in the gazebo north of school.
