Verna M. Fralkick

Verna M. Fralick, 92, of Glen Haven, passed away Friday, Oct. 19, at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster. 

She was born Aug. 16, 1926, in rural Glen Haven, the daughter of Bernard and Cecelia (Walz) Ertel. Verna attended the Consolidated School in Bloomington Township and St. Mary’s School in Glen Haven, before going on to graduate from Bloomington High School in 1944. On Oct. 20, 1945, Verna married Floyd “Bud” Fralick at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Glen Haven. Throughout her life, she was a nurse aide during WWII, and worked at St. Mary’s School in Glen Haven and Orchard Manor Nursing Home. She was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Help of Christians Parish and an active member of their Altar Society. Verna was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and helped at local fire department fundraisers.

Terry Edward Benish

Terry Edward Benish, 66, of Milton, passed away Oct. 11, from a debilitating stroke. He was born in Prairie du Chien, to Edward Benish and Norma (Schmitz) Benish. He was the youngest of four children, and sadly, the first to pass away. In his youth, Terry loved hunting and fishing with his father, Ed. Following his graduation from Prairie du Chien High School, he joined the National Guard and was stationed in Fort Ord, Calif.

Terry married Shirleen Stubbendick in November of 1977, and settled in Janesville. Together, they had two children, Luke and Maggie.

Terry worked for many years at Janesville Products, now known as Janesville Acoustics, until the company closed its Janesville plant in the late 2000s. For the past five years, Terry worked at Generac Power Systems in Whitewater.

Nicholas Walker Smethurst

Nicholas Walker Smethurst, 40 years old and 44 days, passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 13.

He was born Aug. 31, 1978, in Prairie du Chien. Nick’s childhood was spent enjoying the outdoors at his grandparent’s farm, on the river and in the woods with family and friends. Nick graduated from Prairie du Chien High School, the class of 1997. Nick’s love of golf ran deep. He served as his high school’s golf team captain and led his team to multiple sectional and regional tournaments. Nick went on later in life to compete in the Dakota Professional Golf Tour. After graduating high school, he attended the University of Minnesota (Winona), and later moved to the Twin Cities, attending Anoka Technical College.

Christopher Wayne Light

Christopher Wayne Light, 28, formerly of Prairie du Chien, a 2008 graduate, passed away unexpectedly in a tragic automobile accident on Oct. 11. 

He was born Feb. 12, 1990, to the parents of Troy Light, of Prairie du Chien, and Heidi Light, of Boscobel.

Jeanne (Wolford) Kadlec

Jeanne Kadlec entered into eternal life on Oct. 10.

She was born Jeanne Louise Wolford on Dec. 1, 1930, in Prairie du Chien. Jeanne was the youngest of William and Nettie Wolford’s nine children.

She married Leslie Kadlec on Aug. 11, 1951. After living in Prairie du Chien, they spent the next three decades in Oelwein, Iowa. Jeanne was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She served 16 years as a librarian in the Oelwein Public Library before retiring in 1992. After Les passed away, Jeanne moved to Menomonie, in 2000, and enjoyed many special friendships at The Oaks. 

Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers Lyle Bellrichard, Harlan Bellrichard, William Wolford and Robert Wolford; and sisters Grace Anderson, Dorothy Fosdale and Rita Jones.

Karen R. Carroll

Karen R. Carroll, 77, of Prairie du Chien, died peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Crossing Rivers Health, following a long struggle with emphysema and COPD.

She was born Karen Rose Flitsch on July 29, 1941, in Prairie du Chien, the second of two daughters to Earl J. and Margaret M. (Ackerman) “Marge” Flitsch. She was a 1959 graduate of St. Mary’s Academy in Prairie du Chien. Later that year, she married Donald S. Carroll, of Lancaster, and the couple had six children together.

Madolyn 'Susan' Witters

Madolyn “Susan” Witters, 60, of Wauzeka, passed away on Monday, Oct. 8, at her home in Wauzeka. 

She was born Feb. 7, 1958, at Dixon, Ill. She was married to Chad Witters and he preceded her in death. She had been employed by Wisconsin Historical Society, and Sue Waltz Insurance in Boscobel. She was involved with the Friends of the Villa Louis in Prairie du Chien, The Beloit Jr. Women’s Club and First Congregational Church Summer Camp. 

She is survived by a twin brother Tom (Perla) Good of Avalon. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and best friend Meg Schuster.

A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Maxine Leah Johnson

Maxine Leah Johnson, 80, of New Hampton, Iowa, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, at her home in New Hampton, Iowa. Maxine was born June 24, 1938, to Donald and Marcella (Sabbann) Tayek in Linton Township, Allamakee County, Iowa. She graduated from Monona High School in 1956, and earned her degree from Upper Iowa University.

Walter 'Steve' Thornton

Walter “Steve” Thornton, 65, of Prairie du Chien, died Monday, Oct. 8, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien. 

Walter was born June 13, 1953, to Harold and Virginia (Williams) Thornton in Tomahawk. He earned his GED and attended tech school. Walter joined the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War.

Walter was united in marriage with Joyce Shulka on Nov. 25, 1972, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Prairie du Chien. One son was born to this union, Chuck. Walter worked for Gen-Cor in Marquette, Iowa. In his spare time, Walter enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating. He was a fan of Nascar and the Green Bay Packers.
