Kilbourne Claude 'KC' Johnson

Kilbourne Claude ‘KC’ Johnson, 93, passed away peacefully on Sept. 13, in Alexander City, Alabama. Originally from Wisconsin, and a longtime resident of Prairie du Chien, he was the son of Frieda and Claude Johnson, of Prairie du Chien, and brother to Leslie (Viola) and Gaylord Johnson. His passing was preceded by his parents and brothers. 

KC was married to the late Dorothy Elizabeth (Liz) Rhoden of Huntsville, Ala., on Dec. 8, 1945. They had five children: Shirley Minchk (deceased 2008) (Thomas) of Wisconsin, Terry Johnson (Chien) of California, Lynda Schwanz (Michael) of Wisconsin, John Johnson of New York, and Jacqueline Dean (Richard) of Alabama. He departed leaving a legacy of 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, a great-great-granddaughter, many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Lloyd E. Snodgrass

Lloyd E. Snodgrass, 83, of Boscobel, passed away at his home, surrounded by family, on Friday, Sept. 14. He lived and farmed in the Boscobel area most of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene Snodgrass, of Boscobel; a daughter, Betty Snodgrass, of Prairie du Chien; a son, Ethan (Ramona) Kord of Boscobel; six grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, 12 step-great-grandchildren; nine brothers-in-law, five sisters-in-law; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons, Leroy and Steven; a son, Ralph; a brother in infancy; two sisters-in-law, June Copus and Belva Copus, also his father and mother in-law.

Timothy William Mason

Timothy William Mason, 67, of Marquette, Iowa, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse. Tim was born on Oct. 8, 1950, in Prairie du Chien, the son of Charles J. and Cecelia Margaret (O’Brien) Mason. He graduated from Mar-Mac High School and went on to attend college at both NIACC in Mason City, Iowa, and the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

Jess F. Riness

Jess F. Riness, 89, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Monday, Sept. 10, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien. 

He was born Aug. 12, 1929, in Vassar, Mich., the son of Jess and Mary Grace (Valley) Riness. Jess served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He married Hazel Ronkoski on June 15, 1963. He worked at National Decorated Metals and later retired from 3M Company in Prairie du Chien. Jess also did some construction work over the years. 

He is survived by his daughter Sharon Riness, of Prairie du Chien, and his brother Jerry (Sharon) Riness of Viroqua. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hazel; and his brothers, Richard and Jack Riness.

Anna M. Steffensmeier

Anna M. Steffensmeier, 87, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Monday, Sept. 10, at the Gundersen Health System of La Crosse. 

She was born May 27, 1931, in Patch Grove, the daughter of Alonzo and Ivanelle (Taylor) Wilkinson. She married Cletus Steffensmeier on Aug. 27, 1960, at St. John’s Church in Patch Grove. Together, they farmed most of their lives in the Patch Grove area before retiring in Prairie du Chien in 1988. Cletus preceded her in death on March 19, 2011.

Paul Sebastian

Paul Sebastian, adored and cherished husband, father, and grandfather, found comfort in the arms of his loving Savior on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018, at the age of 84.

Paul’s life story began on June 7, 1934, in Prairie du Chien—where he spent his childhood helping on his grandparents’ farm and fishing for bluegill on the Mississippi River. Upon graduation from Campion College Preparatory School, Paul served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, and received an honorable discharge. Several years later, he graduated from UW-Madison with a BBA in accounting and earned his CPA distinction. While living in Madison, Paul met his future wife, Beatrice Cimpl, after a Badger football game. The rest was history. Paul and Bea were married in August of 1959, and their love story continued into parenthood with the adoptions of son, Tom, and daughter, Mary.

Michael J. Hurda

Michael J. Hurda, 69, of Seneca, passed away Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Bland Bekkedal Hospice Center in Viroqua. 

Michael was born Nov. 1, 1948, in Prairie du Chien,  the son of John and Florence (Copus) Hurda. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He married Judy Ray on Oct. 9, 1976, at the Salem United Methodist Church in Eastman. Mike worked at Advance Transformer in Boscobel for many years. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding his motorcycle. He was renowned for his conversational skills.

Eric T. Brey

Eric T. Brey, 42, of Prairie du Chien and formerly of Richland Center, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien. He was born on Sept. 14, 1975, in Sauk County, to Richard and Dorothy (Rose) Brey. 

On Sept. 30, 1991, Eric’s life would forever change. Despite Eric’s disability, he never let it get the best of him. Even on his worst days, he would get up in his wheelchair and conquer the world. 

On Aug. 27, 2011, Eric married the love of his life Lori (Lewis). He was currently an intern with the Crawford County Master Gardeners. He was a 1994 graduate of Richland Center High School.

Anne E. Matti

Anne E. Matti, 88, passed away peacefully on Aug. 31, at McKinley Place in Cedarburg. 

She was born on Dec. 10, 1929, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Orley and Belva Chamberlain.

Anne is survived by her seven children, Susan (Phil) Schroeder, Steven Matti, Nancy (Steve) Irlbeck, Bill Matti, Jeff (Kit) Matti, Jennifer (Mike) Wirth and Christopher Matti; grandchildren, Jesse (David), Emily (Dan), Allison (Joey), Bryan (Carly), Kevin (Maggie), Hannah, Nina, Anne, Madeline, James, Kesslyn and Mason. She is also survived by four great-grandsons; sister, Adeline (George) Sutton; brother, Richard (Lora) Chamberlain; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gaylord Matti; parents; brother, Orley; and sisters, Cleo, Gertrude and Evelyn.
