Karen R. White

Karen R. White, 73, of Prairie du Chien, passed away on Monday, Sept. 3, at her home following an extended illness. 

She was born Dec. 1, 1944, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Vincent and Viola (Muller) Polodna. She married Ronald White on Jan. 5, 1963, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien. Karen owned and operated a country gift shop, Color Me Country, in McGregor, Iowa. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed birds, her flower gardens and most of all, her treasured grandchildren.

Cecelia M. Mara

Cecelia M. Mara, 97, of Eastman, passed away Monday, Aug. 27, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien. She was born Feb. 10, 1921, in Eastman, the daughter of Amos and Sophia (Ocenosak) DuCharme. She married Francis Mara on Aug. 24, 1943, at St. Gabriel’s Church in Prairie du Chien. Together they, farmed in the Eastman/Wauzeka area most of their lives. Cecelia was an active member of St. Wenceslaus Church, enjoyed playing rummy, crocheting, quilting, and scratching off an occasional lottery ticket. Frank preceded her in death on Nov. 4, 2002.

Lydia Marie Rios

Lydia Marie Rios, the infant daughter of Abraham and Alicia (Giddings) Rios, passed away Thursday, Aug. 24, at the American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison, following complications with her birth. She was born July 16, 2018, in West Union, IA. 

She is survived by her parents, Abraham and Alicia and their children Anthony and Brylan Rios, all of Elgin. Her paternal grandfather Antonio Rios, of Oaxaca, Mexico, and maternal grandmother Dawn Fernette, of Elgin, Iowa.

A celebration of Lydia’s life is being planned and will be announced later. The Garrity Funeral Home, of Prairie du Chien, is assisting the family.

Wilfred (Bill) Gayle Stewart

Wilfred (Bill) Gayle Stewart, 81, of Buckeye, Ariz., passed peacefully Saturday, Aug. 18, surrounded by family. 

Born June 30, 1937, in Algona, Iowa, first born to Wilfred and Wilma Stewart. He graduated class of 1955 from West High School in Waterloo, Iowa.

Juanita Norma Vogel Martin

Juanita Norma Vogel Martin, 100, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 21, at the Prairie Maison Care Center. 

One hundred years is a very long life, and Juanita lived it to the fullest. She was born at Lynxville and spent her childhood in Mt. Sterling, where her parents Charles and Edith (Bottolfson) Vogel had a small business. She was confirmed at Utica Lutheran Church, attended Mt. Sterling Grade School, and graduated from Seneca High School in 1935. Her plan to attend La Crosse Teacher’s College ended when her faher’s illness required that she, the oldest child, stay home to help the family.

Linda J. Konichek

Linda J. Konichek, of Fennimore and formerly of Prairie du Chien, passed away on her 69th birthday, Wednesday, Aug. 15. 

She was born Aug. 15, 1949, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Donald and June (Reinhardt) Hand. Linda married John Konichek, Feb. 3, 1968, at the United Methodist Church in Prairie du Chien. She worked as a cook for several restaurants in the Prairie du Chien area and also in the manufacturing industry for companies such as Monona Wire and Prairie Industries.

Cecilia M. Valley Steinberg

Cecilia M. Valley Steinberg, 101, of Prairie du Chien, passed away peacefully with her loving daughters by her side on Thursday, Aug. 16, in Benson, Ariz. 

She was born June 17, 1917, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Charles and Celia (Strnad) Valley. She began working at the Crawford County Courthouse while in high school in all departments. She graduated top of her class in 1935. She married the love of her life, Milton “Shorty” Steinberg on January 30, 1937. Together they raised four fabulous children.

Lowell D. Forde

Lowell D. Forde, 78, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Monday, Aug. 20, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born July 30, 1940, in Decorah, the son of Walter and Gladys (Hulquist) Forde. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He married Suzanne Nodland Faldet on July 4, 199,3 in Las Vegas, Nev. Lowell worked as a barge captain on the Mississippi River for many years. He was an active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Prairie du Chien and loved picnics.

Dorothy Ann Birrenbach

Dorothy Ann Birrenbach, 80, of Prairie du Chien, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien. 

Dorothy was born on Jan. 11, 1938, in Le Sueur, Minn., the daughter of Floyd and Anna (Schaefer) Schwarz.  Dorothy was united in marriage with John Kenneth “Ken” Birrenbach on Feb. 28, 1956. She was an avid bridge player, golfer and bowler. Dorothy was a member of the Memorial Hospital board. She was also an active member of the United Methodist Church and of the 20th century Study Club. (Book Club) She participated in volunteers in Missions for over fifteen years.

Elsie C. Cecka

Elsie C. Cecka, 93, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Friday, Aug. 10, at the Prairie Maison Nursing Home where she resided since May 2004. 

She was born Aug. 20, 1924, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Frank and Elsie (Geisler) Welsh. She was living on the family farm on Irish Ridge when her mother passed away at the young age of 39. Then the family moved into Prairie du Chien.
