Richard Scherf

Richard David Scherf, 49, of McGregor, Iowa died on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at his home in McGregor, Iowa. Richard was born February 25, 1969, to Loren and Carol (Leuchtenmacher) Scherf in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Mar-Mac High School with the class of 1987.

Rich was united in marriage with Sonja Jean Reed; one son was born to this union. They later divorced. Rich had been employed as an industrial painter at Bituma, C.J. Moyna & Sons and Caterpillar. He enjoyed fishing, grilling and reading. Rich was an avid Minnesota Viking and NASCAR fan. He enjoyed spending time with his brothers, but most of all Ryan was the most enjoyment out of life.

Robert “Bob” Glesne Meyer 96, of Arvada, CO passed away gently on May 10th, 2018. Bob was born on November 18, 1921 to Clifton and Milda Meyer in Giard Township, Clayton County, Iowa. He graduated from Elkader High School in 1938 and attended Oklahoma A & M now known as Oklahoma State University where he received a degree in Agricultural Economics and a Lifetime Teaching Certificate in Social Studies.

Roger Mohning

Roger Lee Mohning, 75, of Monona, Iowa died Friday, May 11, 2018, at Crossing Rivers Health Systems in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Roger Lee was born October 18, 1942, to Foster and Laura (Rodas) Mohning in Garnavillo, Iowa. He was baptized on November 15, 1942, and confirmed on March 25, 1956. Roger graduated high school in 1960 from Garnavillo, Iowa. He attended one year of college in Carthage, Illinois.
Roger was united in marriage to Julaine Palas on April 29, 1962, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader, Iowa. Three sons were born to this union. Roger farmed south of Monona, Iowa for many years and was a Pioneer Seeds salesman. He was actively engaged in his church and community. Roger served on numerous boards and committees. In 2011, Roger became a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church. Most of all Roger was a man of faith, a loving husband, father and grandfather. His greatest pride was his grandchildren.

Betty Jean Mabel Kenneally

Betty Jean Mabel Kenneally, 92, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home in Strawberry Point. She was born on June 17, 1925, in Strawberry Point, the daughter of Benjamin Carl and Henrietta Mae (Gibbs) Brockmeyer. Betty was raised and educated in the Strawberry Point area and was a 1942 graduate of Strawberry Point High School.
On July 12, 1948, Betty was united in marriage to Vincent Bayazet Kenneally at St. Mary Catholic Church in Strawberry Point. Betty enjoyed vacationing with her husband.  She also enjoyed collecting antiques, painting, and spending time with her nieces and nephews.

Grace Maker

Grace Martha Maker, 83, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away on Friday, May 11, 2018, at her daughter’s home in Strawberry Point. She was born on November 12, 1934, in Edgewood, the daughter of Charles David and Caroline Josephine (Mueller) Peet. Grace was raised and educated in Edgewood.
On February 1, 1951, Grace was united in marriage to Ewald Arthur Maker. Seven children were born to this union. The couple began farming with Ewald’s father, Arthur Maker, in the Manchester area. They then farmed near Elkader and eventually moved to Strawberry Point in 1956. Grace remained there the rest of her life. She also worked locally at several businesses, but taking care of her family was her most important job.
Grace enjoyed sewing and attending garage sales and auctions.  She loved camping with her family. Most of all, Grace loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them.

Alice Boyes

Alice Louise Boyes, 96, of Garnavillo died Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at her residence in Garnavillo. Alice was born August 2, 1921, in Dubuque, Iowa. She was the daughter of Otto and Edna Freeman Henker. Alice was baptized on August 4, 1921, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Dubuque and was confirmed in May 1934.  She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1940 and then attended Bayless Business College in Dubuque.
On July 29, 1943, she was united in marriage with Glenn Boyes at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Dubuque. Alice worked in the office of Sunbeam Bread in Dubuque from 1942 to 1947. She enjoyed sewing and cooking.
She is survived by one son, Jeffery (Martha) Boyes of Clear Lake, Iowa, one daughter, Lisa Boyes of Grinnell, Iowa; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and a son-in-law, Kris Bierbaum of South Carolina.

Mary Blanche Feller, 104, of St. Olaf, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at the Elkader Care Center. Blanche was born October 24, 1913, in Fayette County, on a farm east of West Union on Highway 56 to Henry and Lilly (Ridgeway) Whitcher. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Methodist Church in Elgin.

Fred T. Fenchel, 95, of Mason City, passed away peacefully, Thursday, April 12, 2018 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Visitation was held Friday, April 20, 2018, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Major-Erickson Funeral Home, Mason City. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 21, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Steve Hansen officiating. Burial was at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Donald Francis Berns age 81, of Garnavillo, IA, died Monday, April 9, 2018, at Elkader Care Center in Elkader, IA. 

Don was born July 25, 1936, in Monona, son of Raymond and Mae (Farmer) Berns. He attended high school graduating with the class of 1954. Don entered into the United States Army Serving from October 1955 until his discharge in October of 1958. Don met and married the love of his life Carolyn Kilnkenberg on October 24, 1961, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Garnavillo. To this union two children were born, Lee and Dee. Don spent most of his life farming the land that he raised his family on. He enjoyed spending time with the love of his life, his children and his grandchildren.

Dwayne Farmer

Dwayne Eldon Farmer, 70, of Marion, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2018, in his home surrounded by his loving family.    

He was born January 21, 1948, on a farm near Volga, Iowa to Donald Eldon and Mildred (Brady) Farmer. He was the oldest of 12 children. He graduated in 1966 from Central Community High School in Elkader, and then joined the Army. Dwayne proudly served in Okinawa and returned home to begin his 45-plus year career in masonry construction. His masonry artistry can be enjoyed all over the state of Iowa.
