John Kluth

John Verdine Kluth, 86, of Farmersburg, Iowa died Sunday, January 7, 2018 at Elkader Care Center, Elkader, Iowa. John was born on May 1, 1931, to John A. and Alice (Glawe) Kluth in rural Farmersburg Township. He was baptized on June 14, 1931, and confirmed on July 25, 1945, at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, Iowa. John attended Mecklenberg rural school and graduated from Farmersburg High School in 1948. He farmed with his folks after graduation. In 1953 John was drafted into the United States Army. He served thirteen months in France. John was honorably discharged in 1955.

 Kyle Russell Dettmann, age 45, went to join his family in heaven on Friday, December 29, 2017, from the Guttenberg Care Center.  

Kyle received his education from the Garnavillo School System and worked for many years constructing homes. Kyle loved four wheeling, stock car racing, motorcycles and spending time with family and friends.

James “Jim” Ormus Farmer, 90, of Gunder, Iowa died Saturday, December 23, 2017 at his home. James Ormus was born June 18, 1927 to Lee and Ruby (Trudo) Farmer in Clermont, Iowa. He attended Grand Meadow Country School near Clermont through the ninth grade and attended one year of high school in Postville.

Margaret R. Marfilius, 100, of Monona, Iowa died Friday, December 22, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society in Postville, Iowa. Margaret Ruth was born April 27, 1917 to George and Hulda (Miller) Hubacher in Mason City, Iowa. She attended Jackson and Roosevelt School through the eighth grade, graduated from the Mason City High School and attended two years at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Richard W. Hein age 83 of Owatonna and formerly of Prairie du Chien passed away Thursday, December 21, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born November 14, 1934 in Dubuque, IA the son of Milton and Virginia (Donner) Hein.  Richard farmed most of his life in Clayton County, Iowa.

Donna Radloff August 9, 1922 to December 16, 2017

Donna Mae Radloff was born on August 9, 1922, the daughter of Donald and Lillian (Vogt) Oleke in Farmersburg, Iowa. She was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Farmersburg, Iowa in 1936. After high school Donna married Homer Moritz.  They were blessed with three children, David, Paul and Mary. Homer passed away in 1950. Donna later married Charles Dohrer; this union was blessed with one daughter, Kathrine. In 1963 Chuck passed away. Ten years later she married, James (Bud) Courtney, who passed away four years later. On February 2, 1977, Donna married school classmate, Ken Radloff.  They were married 37 years until his passing in August 2016.

Harold Vorwald June 18, 1934 to December 18, 2017

Harold Frank Vorwald, 83, Monona, Iowa, died peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, December 18, 2017, at North Gate Care Center, Waukon, Iowa. He was born on June 18, 1934 on his family farm outside of Clayton, Iowa. His parents were Erwin (Jack) and Agnes (Burr) Vorwald. He attended Country School Rural Clayton through the third grade, then attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School through the tenth grade. Harold graduated from Garnavillo High School in the class of 1952.
Harold was married on June 14 of 1956 to his loving wife Joanne Jarms at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Garnavillo, Iowa. Harold also received baptism, first communion, and confirmation at St Joseph’s.

Franklin Wacker December 23, 1933-December 18, 2017

Franklin Wacker, 83, of Elkader, died Monday, December 18, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center. Franklin Delano Wacker was born December 23, 1933, rural Elkader, to Frank R. and Anna (Krieg) Wacker. He received his early schooling at Dry Run School and graduated from Elkader High School in 1952.
In 1954, he enlisted in the United States Army and was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was honorably discharged in April of 1956 and returned to farm the family farm with his wife Pat Schmelzer whom he married on July 11, 1955 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elkader. Three children were born to this union.
Next to farming, fishing was his ambition and then spending winters in Zapata, Texas.

Gary “Skinny” Larson

Gary “Skinny” Lee Larson, 65, of West Union, formerly of Elkader, passed away unexpectedly following complications from surgery on Saturday, December 9, 2017, at Mercy Medical Hospital in Dubuque.

Gary, the son of Henry and Margie (Schuety) Larson, was born November 24, 1952, in McGregor.  On June 29th, 1990, Gary was united in marriage to Lynn (Hjelmeng) Gamm and became the step-father of Lynn’s four children, Blake, Scott, Erich and Jessica.
