Lois Morarend

Lois Mildred Morarend, 84, of Edgewood, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, December 9, 2017, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood. She was born on July 24, 1933, in Millville, the daughter of Martin Orville and Edna Katrina (Brandenburg) White. Lois attended Clayton County rural schools and graduated from Luana High School, where she was an outstanding basketball player.

Joseph Spielbauer

Joseph Mathias Spielbauer, 90, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Volga and Prairie Du Chien, WI, died Wednesday, November 22, 2017, at New Aldaya Lifescapes Assisted Living, Cedar Falls. He was born on January 24, 1927, in Guttenberg, to George and Frances (Rohner) Spielbauer. Joseph attend St. Mary’s Catholic School through 12th grade. He then enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed in the Pacific during WWII. He worked at Flexsteel in Dubuque for several years before becoming a dairy farmer in Volga.

Corinne Elizabeth Schoien, 91, of Elkader, Iowa, formerly of rural Elgin, Iowa, died Friday, November 17, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center. Corinne was born on August 13, 1926, in Monona, Iowa, to Herman and Alma (Torkelson) Schoien. She was baptized and confirmed at the Highland Lutheran Church, rural Elkader, where she was a faithful lifelong member.

Edmund “Lee” Glesne

Edmund “Lee” Glesne, 92, of Marion, Iowa formerly of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin died Monday, November 13, 2017 at Winslow House in Marion, Iowa. Lee was born June 1, 1925 to Oscar T. and Josephine (Lee) Glesne in St. Olaf, Iowa. He attended the Glesne School for grades 1-6 and graduated from Elkader High School. Lee received his B.A. in education from I.S. Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls and earned his Master’s in school administration from the University of Northern Illinois. Lee enlisted in the Army after graduating High School. He served overseas in the European Theater in the 76th Field Artillery Battalion Battery C.

Raymond Cousins

Raymond Clifford Cousins Jr., 84, died Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at the V.A. Central Iowa Health Care System, Des Moines, Iowa. 

Ray was born in Elkader, IA to Raymond Sr. and Edith Cousins. He graduated from Elkader High School. After high school, he served in the Air Force from August 1953-July 1957, where he was stationed in Germany working in electronic communications maintenance.

Delpha Bowman

Delpha Emma Matilda (Appel) Bowman, 94, of Garber, died Saturday, November 4th at the Edgewood Convalescent Home. She was born on April 27, 1923, in Clayton County to Frieda Appel. Frieda married Fritz Klinkenberg on January 30, 1924, and raised Delpha on a farm near Saint Olaf, Iowa.

Delpha graduated from Elkader High School and attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette where she studied normal training to become a schoolteacher. After graduation, she began teaching at Mecklenburg school in rural St. Olaf. During World War II she dispensed ration stamps to the rural people of the area as most goods were rationed during the war.

Kenneth French

Kenneth (Kenny) Gene French, age 88, passed away peacefully at home with the love of his life by his side on Monday, November 6, 2017. Kenneth was born July 22, 1929, in Postville, Iowa to LeRoy and Florence (Baldwin) French. 

 Kenny was united in marriage to Geraldine (Gerry) A. Shea on March 17, 1955, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader, Iowa. Together, they had seven children: Terry (Dan) Sullivan, Dodgeville, Wisconsin; Sharon Taylor, Arlington, Iowa; Jeanne (Mark) Melon, Guttenberg, Iowa; Cindy (Steve) Wendl, Anamosa, Iowa; Jayme French, Manchester, Iowa; Gary (Jennifer) French, Sydney, Australia; and Merry French, Aurora, Iowa.

Marian Benson

Marian S. Benson, 96, passed away with her daughter by her side, Friday, October 27, in the Elkader Care Center. Born October 7, 1921 in Chillicothe, IL, Marian was the daughter of Philip and Sophie (Christensen) Ellberg. Educated in Morris, IL she received her LPN from Morris Hospital. She worked there upon graduation. In 1941, Marian met the love of her life when Russell I. Benson came into the hospital, suffering injuries from a car accident. She was his nurse and he said she gave such good back rubs, he just had to marry her. The two married on Oct 16, 1942 and farmed his family farm in Wauponsee Township.

Gary Stewart

Gary Gene Stewart, 77, passed away on October 27, 2017, at Ennoble Skilled Nursing Center in Dubuque, IA. Gary was born on September 21, 1940, in rural Garber, IA, the son of Samuel and Blanche (Hansel) Stewart. He attended Colesburg School and then entered the Army from 1960-1963.

On April 8, 1967, Gary was joined in marriage to Marilyn (Barnhart) at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. This past April, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They resided in Dubuque IA, and then in 1980 moved to Littleport IA, and then Elkader, IA, in 1999.
