Harlan Patrick

Harlan Owen Patrick, 63, of Elkader, passed away Saturday October 21, 2017, at his home. Harlan (Harley) was born July 13, 1954, in West Union, to Earl and Helen (Lauer) Patrick. He grew up and attended Central Community school in Elkader and graduated in 1972.  

Harley was united in marriage to Joyce Hemby on September 2, 2000, at St. Joseph Church in Elkader.

LaVerne Troester

LaVerne L. Troester (Mrs. Oscar Troester), 93, of Garnavillo, died Saturday, September 23, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center. LaVerne was born November 3, 1923, near Clayton, Iowa. She was the daughter of Lester and Anna Fischer Mohning. LaVerne graduated from Garnavillo High School with the class of 1941. On December 29, 1943, she was united in marriage to Oscar Troester at Peace Lutheran Church at Clayton. Three children were born to this union.

Terry Maggert April 29, 1945 to October 6, 2017

Terry Fredrick Maggert, 72, of Elkader, Iowa, went to be with Jesus, his Savior, on October 6, 2017.

Terry was born April 29, 1945, at the farm in Pony Hollow, outside of Elkader, to Gail and Maxine “Pat” (Freeman) Maggert. He attended school at Central Community of Elkader, graduating in May 1963. He then enlisted and served four years in the United States Navy. Terry married Suzan Rae Grabowski in Rome, New York, on September 23, 1967. To this union a son and daughter were born.

Eileen Ruff April 7, 1931 to October 16, 2017

Eileen A. Ruff, 86, of McGregor, Iowa died Monday, October 16, 2017, at her home in McGregor, Iowa in the care of her family. Eileen Agnes was born on April 7, 1931 to Lester and Ronilla (Schoulte) Connor in Elkader, Iowa. She attended Country School, St. Joseph Catholic School, Elkader High School, and graduated from Monona High School in 1948.

Eileen was united in marriage with Erwin Ruff on September 8, 1951, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Monona, Iowa. Eight children were born to this union. Together they farmed outside of McGregor, Iowa. She enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, growing flowers and tending to her farm animals. Eileen enjoyed cooking maple syrup each spring.

Duane Walter November 23, 1929-September 25, 2017

Duane Clarence Walter, 87, of McGregor, Iowa died Monday, September 25, 2017, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, Iowa. Duane was born November 28, 1929, to Clifford and Bertha (Sonstegard) Walter in rural Luana, Iowa. He attended Eno Country School through the 8thgrade. Duane proudly served in the United States Army.

Larry Miles

Larry Lorraine Miles, 75, of Elgin, Iowa, died Monday, September 11, 2017, at his home in Elgin, Iowa. Larry was born November 9, 1941 to Virgil and Elna (Robinson) Miles in Aurora, Iowa. He graduated from Valley High School in 1959. After graduation, Larry joined the United States Navy in 1960 and proudly served until 1962 as a first-aid attendant in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Vietnam, Guam, Hawaii and Hong Kong. He was involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis in the Bay of Pigs. Larry later served in the Naval Reserve.

Larry was united in marriage with Marcia Dennler on March 9, 1974. Two daughters were born to this union, Sherri Lynn and Kristi Ione

Rodger Sear Jr.

Rodger Cletus Sear, Jr., 75, of Garber, IA, died Thursday, September 7, 2017, at his home near Garber. He was the son of Rodger and Betty Sear Sr., and was born October 23, 1941, in Dubuque.

Rodger received his education locally, and served his country in the United States Army. He owned and operated the Sear Auto Salvage and Sear 66 Service for a many years. On November 26, 1976, he was united in marriage with Carla Hansel in Dubuque. Rodger enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting and spending time with grandchildren.

Sherry O’Neal

Sherry Lynn O’Neal, 65, of Garnavillo, Iowa died Saturday September 9, 2017, at her residence in Garnavillo, Iowa.

Sherry was born May 13, 1952, at McGregor. She was the daughter of Clayton and Lucille Glawe, O’Neal. Sherry was under the care of Scenic Acres most of her life. She enjoyed watching television and listening to music. 

She is survived by four sisters, Donna Starkey of Luana, Diane (Milo) Doerring of Luana, Susan (Joe) Ludvick of Prairie du Chien, Linda Ambrose (Jim Schlitter) of Luana and a sister-in-law, Nancy (Chuck) Blong of Farmersburg.

Harley Glawe

Harley Glawe, 90, of rural St. Olaf, died Thursday, August 31, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center. 

Harley Carl Henry Glawe, son of Herman and Louisa (Polkow) Glawe was born September 17, 1926, in Boardman Township, rural Elkader.  He was raised and educated in Clayton County, attending Pony Hollow School. He wanted his children to go to college because he didn’t get to graduate from high school

Roger Lee Glawe

Roger Lee Glawe, 64, of Volga, died on Tuesday, August 29, 2017, at home, following a long illness. He was born January 9, 1953, in McGregor, to Lloyd and Ivanelle (Schuety) Glawe. He was baptized at Norway Lutheran Church, rural St. Olaf, and confirmed at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Roger graduated from Central High School in 1971.

He was united in marriage to Phyllis Peterson on December 5, 1981, at Marion Lutheran Church, Gunder.   He lived and farmed on his family farm near St. Olaf. Roger worked at Korte Implement, Elkader Co-op and Leete Trucking until he started working at Corby’s Tire and Muffler in Elkader, where he worked for almost 30 years.
