Jewell Chappell June 14, 1921 to April 11, 2017

Jewell Chappell, 95, died Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center. Jewell Janet Hulverson was born on June 14, 1921, to Lawrence and Myra (Wells) Hulverson, on a farm near Elkader. When she was nine months old the family moved to a farm west of Volga City. In 1937, they moved to Volga. She attended country school for eight years, then to high school in Volga, where she graduated with the class of 1939.

She was united in marriage to Glenn Chappell on November 9, 1939, at St. Sebald Lutheran Church, rural Strawberry Point. Five children were born to this union. Together the couple farmed.

Marlene Heuer June 8, 1938 to December 22, 2016

Marleen June Heuer, 78, passed away on Thursday morning, December 22, 2016, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader after a series of illnesses.

She was born on the family farm, rural Garnavillo, on June 8, 1938, to Arno and Mabel (Kelpien) Heuer.

Marlene attended county school near her home and graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1956. She lived and worked on the farm until her recent move to Elkader. For a time she worked in Monona and Guttenberg.

Gary Lee White, 69, of Garnavillo, IA, died Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at the Great River Care Center in McGregor, IA. He was born on September 21, 1947, in Elkport IA, the son of Everett and Bertha White.

Maurice E. Whitman, 88, of Marion, Iowa, formerly of Clayton Center, Iowa, entered into eternal life with his Lord and Savior on Monday, March 20, 2017. Visitation was held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, 2017, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Graveside Services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 27, 2017, at Clayton Center Cemetery, Clayton Center, Iowa, conducted by Reverend Bruce Hanson.

Kathryn F. (Muench) Backes went home to her savior on March 2, 2017, in Kissimmee, FL. She was born in 1945, the daughter of William and Jeanne (Jones) Muench in the small town of Elkader, IA.

Wayne Scheppele

Wayne Milton Scheppele departed this world to be with the Lord on March 15, 2017. He was born August 12, 1927, to Milton Louis Scheppele and Sylvia Mae Opel in Dubuque, Iowa. He graduated high school in May 1945 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 where he served until the end of WWII. He graduated from the University of Dubuque in June 1950 with a bachelor of science degree with teaching credentials. He taught physical education, English, and speech at both Dubuque and Garnavillo high schools.

Tom Cheeseman

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my husband, Tom Cheeseman, 60, on Saturday March 11, 2017. He was born October 30, 1956 in Prairie du Chien, WI to Byron and Helen Cheeseman, the last of four boys. He moved to Bakersfield in 1977 to escape the cold of Iowa and to start a new life in sunny Bako.

Lorraine Ingwersen

Lorraine Ingwersen, 68, passed away March 13, 2017, at her home surrounded by her family, the same day as her mother-in-law 52 years later. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 18, 2017, at West Des Moines Christian Church with burial at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Visitation wase from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at McLaren’s Chapel in West Des Moines.

Verda Mae Palas

Verda Mae Palas, 86, formerly of Farmersburg, died Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center. She was born May 23, 1930, in Farmersburg to Glendor and Wilma (Klinkenberg) Zurcher.

She was united in marriage to Gerald Palas. Four sons were born to this union. The couple farmed together. Verda served as Activities Director at the Elkader Care Center for many years. She was also an Avon representative. Verda was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg, where she served on numerous church groups.

Helen Seeland

Helen Seeland, 95,  of rural Elkader passed away on February 28, 2017.  Helen was born on June 23, 1921, to Charles and Anna (Oehrle)  Nichols in Elkader where she attended and graduated from the public schools.  On May 31, 1940, she married Harold Seeland at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.  While raising five children, she was actively involved with the work on the family farm. Cooking and baking for her family and others were life-long pleasures for her.  Often her cooking and baking used fruits and vegetables from the big garden she enjoyed cultivating.
