Roger Moeller

Roger Frederick William Moeller, 64, of Luana, Iowa died Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union, Iowa. He was born on February 18, 1951, to Orlando and Margenelle (Becker) Moeller at the Postville Community Hospital, Postville, Iowa. Roger was baptized on April 8, 1951, and confirmed on April 11, 1965, both at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. He graduated high school from Postville Community High School on May 23, 1969, and graduated from Northeast Area One on May 13, 1971.

Ruth Sorensen

On October 8, 2015, at 8 a.m., a wonderful wife and mother, Ruth Delores Sorensen, died in Hood River, Oregon at her home. She was a product of the Depression, strong and resilient. Her hometown was small, Elkader, Iowa, on the Turkey River. Sleigh rides, strap on skates, hearty lunches at noon, all were a part of Ruth’s childhood. She was a New Year’s baby, born January 1, 1924. Her father, Edward Burlingame, who at one time lived in Montana and rode on the prairie with American Indians, owned a general store, and knew how to pinch pennies. Elizabeth Burlingame was a fabulous cook, untiring church volunteer and warm, loving mother.

Opal Wright

Opal Neoma Wright, 101, of Strawberry Point, died Friday, October 9, 2015, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. She was born July 31, 1914, in rural Elkport, to Frank and Maggie (Noggle) Ortmann. Opal received her education in the Elkport School.

She was united in marriage to Donald Resor in September, 1931.  Later, she married Clarence Wright.

Opal enjoyed crafting, gardening, reading and exercising. She worked at Goodrich in Strawberry Point for several years.

Michael Roach

CMS (Retired) Michael J. Roach, 84, of Elkader, died Saturday, October 3, 2015, at his home. He was born June 10, 1931, in Elkader, to Leo M. and Julia (Quinn) Roach and grew up in rural Elkader. Mike received his education at the rural school where his mother taught and later went to St. Joseph Catholic School, graduating with the class of 1949. As a youth he was active in the Worthwhile 4-H Club and baseball and high school basketball. He attended college for 2½ years. He served in the Iowa National Guard for 1½ years before he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1952, where he proudly served his country for more than 28 years. He served two tours of duty in Japan and two tours in Korea along with many other bases throughout the years.

Jeanette Schuety

Jeannette L. Schuety, 86, of Elkader, died Monday, October 5, 2015, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. She was born April 16, 1929, in Elkader, to Oscar and Evelyn (Olson) Possehl. Jeannette attended Elkader schools.

She was united in marriage to Aden Hanson in 1946, at Friedens Evangelical Church in Elkader. Three children were born to this union. They later divorced. Jeannette was united in marriage to Ronald Schuety in 1970, at the Ankeny Christian Church.

Steven Glawe

Steven Chris Glawe, 59, of Elkader, died Sunday, October 4, 2015, at his home in Elkader. He was born July 21, 1956, in Prairie du Chien, WI, to Bernelle and Wilma (Scherf) Glawe.  Steve was baptized September 25, 1956, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garnavillo and confirmed October 12, 1973, at Norway Lutheran Church, rural St. Olaf.

Dawn Lange

Dawn Delite Lange, 54, of Edgewood, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2015, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. She was born on July 22, 1961, in Elkader, the daughter of Valdean and Patricia (Kuehl) Lange. Dawn was raised and educated in the area, and was a 1979 Central Community High School graduate.

After graduation Dawn worked for the Elkader Care Center for 20-plus years, many as a CNA.  She also worked as a bartender at various local bars and restaurants, and drove the van for Northern Iowa Community Action. On December 1, 1984, Dawn was united in marriage to Richard Clinton. They later divorced.

Norma Jean Nelson

Norma Jean (Lamphier) Nelson was born in her family home on February 12, 1937, to Willis and Nellie (Landis) Lamphier. Norma grew up in Elkader attending school and graduating from Elkader High School. She married Eugene Troester on June 29, 1955, at the First Congregational Church in Elkader. Four children were born to this union. They later divorced.

JoAnn Scherf

JoAnn Alice Scherf, 70, of Harpers Ferry, Iowa died Monday, September 7, 2015 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa. JoAnn was born on December 6, 1944 to Arthur and Lucille (Bruns) Wagner in Farmersburg, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg, Iowa. JoAnn graduated high school from MFL in 1963.

JoAnn was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Lloyd Scherf, on December 21, 1963 at St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg, Iowa. Five children were born to this union. They lived in St. Olaf from 1967 until 1987, then moved to Harpers Ferry and owned and operated J & L One Stop for five years and The Harbor House for 12 years.
