Seneca softball season ends at state

Center fielder Kendra Chambers (6) catches a fly ball to the outfield during the state tournament semifinal against Oakfield last Wednesday. Left fielder Bridget Hagensick looks on.

Seneca’s Aubrey Wallin dives back to first base to avoid the tag after a snap throw from the Oakfield catcher caught her with a big lead. Wallin’s single in the fifth and final inning was one of only two hits for Seneca in the game. Senior first baseman Nicky Trautsch also singled earlier in the game. (Photos by Charley Preusser)

Coach Sara Wall directs runner Aubrey Wallin how to navigate from third base to home.

Seneca's season is over and the team heads for the bus after losing to Oakfield in the semifinal game played on Monday, June 28 at UW-Green Bay.

A difficult matchup against top-seeded Oakfield in Wisconsin state semifinal softball action ended the Seneca Indians’ softball season, 10-0, just one game shy of the championship. However, the loss didn’t take away the Ridge and Valley Conference champions successful season as a whole.

The Seneca softball team won the WIAA Division 5 Sectional Championship held in Bangor on Wednesday, June 23 with 3-2 victory over Independence-Gilmanton.

Seneca got off to a slow start and spotted Independence-Gilmanton two runs in the second inning–fueled by some errors and misplayed balls. The first run came on a passed ball and the second run scored when the Seneca third baseman Aubrey Wallin tried to throw a runner out at home instead of taking the third out by taking the runner going to first.

Seneca sunk by bad second inning

If it could go wrong it did go wrong for the Seneca softball team in the second inning of the WIAA Division 5 State Tournament Semifinal Game that was held in Green Bay on Monday.

Seneca went three up and three down in the top of the first inning, but all three hitters made contact with the ball.

Their opponent, the number one seeded Oakfield, took advantage of a missed played bunt. Seneca pitcher Philomena Hall fielded the bunt and tried to throw out the runner at first, instead of tagging her.

Hall’s throw went past first baseman and scored the runner from second.

Then, Oakfield’s left fielder tripled to left field to score the runner.
