Prairie wrestlers place four, Koenig repeats as State Champ


Sophomore Rhett Koenig stands atop the podium after winning the 113# State Title. This is Koenig’s second State Title, after winning the 106# Championship last year.

Sophomore Rhett Koenig breaks his NGL opponent down in the finals at 113#. Koenig would go on to win 5-2 for a State Championship.

Senior Bradyn Saint uses a collar tie while working for hand fighting in the finals against his Ashland opponent. Saint would finish in 2nd place, a State Runnerup at 170#.

Senior Matt Rogge uses a leg ride to break down his Freedom opponent. Rogge would go on to win 7-2 and finish in 5th place at 152#.

Sophomore Maddox Cejka scores a single leg takedown on his Kiel opponent. Cejka would go on to win by major decision 12-3 on his way to a 6th place finish at 132#.

In a year that was unlike any other, the 78th annual WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament was held on Saturday, Feb. 13 at three different locations; one for each division. In a normal year, the Kohl Center and the Madison area would have been a popular place with wrestling enthusiasts converging from all corners of the state. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, things were modified for the safety of the student/athletes and spectators. Division 2 was hosted by Adams-Friendship High School. Prairie du Chien was represented by a contingent of seven wrestlers with quests to win a State Title.

Hawks qualify 7 wrestlers for state


Seven Prairie du Chien High School wrestlers qualified for the Division 2 Individual State Wrestling Tournament to be held in Adams-Friendship on Saturday, Feb. 13. Prairie du Chien also qualified for the State Team Wrestling Tournament in Adams-Friendship on Feb. 20. The seven individual qualifiers are, front row: Maddox Cejka, Rhett Koenig, Ryder Koenig and Bradyn Saint. Back row: Luke Kramer, Matt Rogge and Mason Baumgartner.

The PDC Blackhawk wrestling team is advancing seven individuals to the state tournament. Richland Center was the host of a WIAA Division 2 Sectional on Saturday, Feb. 6. This sectional was represented by wrestlers from 25 teams from four regionals.

Several River Ridge-Cassville wrestlers competed in the Division 3 Lancaster Regional Saturday.

Mineral Point won the regional with a team score of 255. Fennimore had 228, Iowa Grant-Highland 224, Lancaster 157.5, Pecatonica-Argyle 103, and River Ridge Cassville 44.

The River Ridge girls basketball team notched another game in the win column by defeating visiting Benton 67-33 in a Six Rivers West contest Monday night. 

The Lady Timberwolves led 29-13 at the half en route to the victory.

Maddox Cejka toes the line in his semifinal match at regionals. Cejka would win by major decision and then go on to victory in the finals for a Regional Title at 132#.

On Saturday, Jan. 30, the WIAA wrestling tournament series started in the state of Wisconsin. Prairie du Chien was the host for a WIAA D2 Regional, with six teams competing for a crown.

Sophomore Ryder Koenig uses an arm bar to work a turn against his Stoughton opponent. Koenig would win by technical fall 23-8.

On Friday night, the #6 D2 ranked Blackhawk wrestling team hosted a quadrangular in the Fieldhouse. Not wanting to miss out on great competition in a shortened season, the Hawks invited the likes of Holmen, Sparta, and Stoughton to town. All are D1 schools with some great wrestlers. Holmen was ranked #3 in D1, and Stoughton, the defending D1 State Champs, were ranked #2 in D1.

The Prairie du Chien/Fennimore gymnastics team traveled to Hazel Green for a six-team invitational. The PDC/F girls took first place with a season high score of 124.5! The girls were so excited when they heard their name called for first place, and it was a very proud moment for the coaches.
