McGregor Methodist Church will have new life as community space

The McGregor Methodist Church, which was closed in July, will have new life as the nonprofit Convention Conference Community Center. (Photos by Audrey Posten)

Joe Brooks envisions space for family gatherings, meetings or presentations for up to 100 people. The upstairs has stadium seating and, with the AV system, would be ideal for speakers. Downstairs, the full kitchen is also in good shape, and there are tables available for projects.

“There are a lot of things people of faith can use it for,” Brooks added, “but it can also be used for non-denominational weddings and other services. I’d like to keep this as a place where faith is important, but the religious doctrine isn’t."

Construction on the building, located at 330 Ann St., was completed in 1873, but the community’s Methodist congregation dates back to the 1850s. When the church closed in July, “I started contacting the United Methodist Conference to see what they were going to do with the building,” Brooks said. “So many historic buildings in McGregor have been torn down. It would be a shame. This is a landmark building for the city.”

Brooks, who is actually Catholic, is proud of his role in re-purposing the historic building. “But I have a long line of grandparents and aunts who were Methodists,” he shared. “I kind of feel it’s out of respect for them and the people who worshipped here to keep the building as a place where people can still come.”
