Donald J. Zimmerman, 86, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away peacefully at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 29, at home. 

Donald was born on Sept. 8, 1928, in Prairie du Chien, son of Robert J. and Helen (Shulka) Zimmerman. Donald proudly served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Rita Check on Feb. 14, 1952, in Prairie du Chien. They enjoyed 60 years together before she preceded him in death on April 4, 2012. Donald was employed as a carpenter with several companies throughout the years and was lastly employed with Hillcrest Family Services as a Maintenance Supervisor for 12 years until his retirement in 1993. He had many interests including golfing, computer flight simulation and exploring and embracing technology in general. Donald was an accomplished woodworker and was well known for the beautiful furniture he built. He was also a very active member of the Assisi Village community and thoroughly enjoyed sharing his grilling talents with the other residents. Donald was a kind-hearted man with a generous soul who was undeniably known as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Donald is survived by his five children, Dr. Debra (Richard) Hohnecker, of Amesbury, Mass., Bob (Judy) Zimmerman, of Neenah, Jolene (Gerald) McDermott, Castle Rock, Colo., Brian Zimmerman, of Wichita, Kans., Jim (Anne) Zimmerman, of Rochester, Minn.; eighteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; and his brother-in-law, Robert Williams, Rockford, Ill.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 60 years, Rita; and a sister, Diane Williams.

To honor Donald’s life, funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, , at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church, 2921 Central Ave., with Rev. Dwayne J. Thoman officiating. To celebrate Donald’s life, family and friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where there will be a parish scripture wake service held at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, where full military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.
