Dennis Milton Hamann, 68, of Garnavillo, died suddenly Thursday, April 30, 2015, in his home in National.

Visitation was Monday, May 4, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral service were Tuesday, May 5, at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elkader, conducted by Rev. Jerome Godson.

Interment was at Garnavillo Community Cemetery with military honors.

Dennis was born the son of Milton F. and Wilma (Witte) Hamann on June 14, 1946, in Postville. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Farmersburg. Following graduation from Garnavillo High School, Dennis served his country in the United States Army, where he received his A.A. Degree in music. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Dennis married Beverly Behrend at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg on July 20, 1968, a union that was blessed with two children. Dennis farmed for over 50 years, but continued helping his neighbors with farm work after he retired.

Over the years, Dennis had served as a Chaplain’s assistant and instrumentalist in the Army marching band, a club 4-H leader, Clayton County 4-H Youth Council Director, Clayton County Fair Manager, swine superintendent, president of several church councils, and a volunteer VA transit driver. He also served on the board of directors for the Garnavillo School, Farm Credit Services of America, and Strawberry Point Lutheran Home, and was the voice of the Central Warriors for 43 years.

Dennis was a current member of the American Legion for 45 years, chairman of the Clayton County Republicans, Farmersburg township clerk, county and state fair judge in science, engineering, and agriculture, and a long-time Iowa State Cyclone Club member and football season ticket holder. Dennis enjoyed taking the family to Cyclone football games, was an avid fan of the Milwaukee Brewers and Ed-Co Vikings, could be consistently found at the various events of his grandchildren and he also filled in for worship services when churches were in need.

Dennis is survived by his wife of 46 years, Beverly; one daughter, Tracy (Mike) Nemechek; one son, Aaron (Shanna) Hamann; six grandchildren, Timothy, Ashley, Megan, Samuel Nemechek, Dakota and Jenna Hamann; one sister, Darlyce Hamann; one brother, James (Linda) Hamann; one brother-in-law, Ray Troester, and many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Janis Troester, and various aunts, uncles, cousins, and two nephews.
